Contact seller4-star sellerFair ex-lib., lacks most of shelfback. [5], 142 p.; 18 cm. A satire on Mr. Turncote's troubles with the established Church of England From the Preface: `The object at which an immense proportion of our fellow-creatures are aiming is so evidently the pleasing of self, that it is a matter of legitamte surprise that scarcely any tr…eatises exist upon that subject in the abstract. If to serve himself is the end of man, it must be the most important of all sciences. Now the Exercises of St. Ignatius, or, as they are more frequently called, Ignatian Retreats, constitute the most renowned system for studying the End of Man; I therefore propose to write a short treatise, upon pleasing one's self, as the End of Man, and the system followed in those Exercises.' Meditations are provided for eight days. Anticipates the philosophy of Ayn Rand. Binding is Hardcover.

Add to basketCloth Boards. Condition: Very Good Minus. 280pp. Bound in black and red cloth boards. Gilt embossed lettering to the spine, which is lightly sunned. There is rubbing to the head and tail of the spine with a little loss of the cloth. Light rubbing to the board corners. A little bubbling to the cloth of the rear board. The book ha…s some spine lean and light foxing to the fore edges. There are three different name stamps to the preliminary blank page and a date stamp 30 May 1941. The foxing from the lower fore edge encroaches onto the lower margin of a few pages and there are a few light soil marks and very occasional finger soiling to the page margins of several pages. The text block is otherwise on the whole clean. Light crease to the top corner of the rear end paper. The book is tightly bound. A very good copy of this humourous book.

With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. The first edition of the work. With a dedication from the author to the front blank: 'R Longueville From The Author T.L 8 Ju…ly 87'. 'The Prig' is a pseudonym for Thomas Longueville, an author of several works including Pryings among Private Papers, and The Life of Sir Kenelm Digby. In a red and black cloth binding. Externally very smart with just some slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. A few light marks to the boards.Small puncture mark to the rear board. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages. Dedication from the author to front blank. Very Good. None (illustrator). signed by author. book.
