Jahrhunderts entwarfen die Stadt der Zukunft als Maschine, Kunstler wurden zu Schopfern ,autonomer" Kunstwerke fur den Kunstmarkt. Baum, Paradies und Landschaft waren kein Thema fur Avantgardisten, ebenso wenig wie fur Galerien und Museen. Mazene legten keine Garten an, sie sponserten Autorennstalle. Mit der Umweltbewegung der letzten Jahrzehnte entstand jedoch auch ein neues Interesse am ,grunen Raum". Die Geschichte der Gartenkunst wurde wiederentdeckt, Problemfelder wie historische Garten, Industriebrachen oder ,shrinking cities" provozierten die Aufmerksamkeit von Kunstlern, schon ab 1966 legte Ian Hamilton Finlay in Schottland seinen einzigartigen Garten an. Die Durftigkeit bisheriger Grun-Planungen wurde im Licht dieser Entwicklung immer deutlicher erkennbar. In dieser Situation waren nicht zuletzt Kunstakademien gefordert. Sie hatten uber mehr als ein Jahrhundert die Bedeutung und Gestaltung des Grunraums ignoriert. Im Jahr 2000 setzte die ,Angewandte" (Universitat fur angewandte Kunst Wien) mit der Grundung einer Klasse fur Landschaftsdesign ein Zeichen, das internationale Resonanz fand. Ermutigungen kamen von Lucius Burckhardt, John Dixon Hunt, Martin Drury (The National Trust) und vielen anderen.…
