Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Officially incorporated in 1866, the site of Dallastown was once used as a parade ground by local militia during the Revolutionary War era. When James Peeling purchased 95 acres in the area in 1841, he set in motion the community's formation. In 1844, the town was officially named Dallastown, in honor of Philadelphia lawyer and vice president elect George M. Dallas. The final decades of the 19th century saw even more development for Dallastown. The first cigar factory in town opened in 1860, and by 1885, over 38 factories were in operation, creating new jobs, attracting new businesses, and more than doubling the population. Marking its sesquicentennial in 2016, the community of Dallastown continues to celebrate its borough and its unique history. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Six of Pennsylvanias first eight postCivil War governors were veterans of the American Civil War. This streak spanned four decades, from the election of John White Geary in 1866 to Samuel W. Pennypackers final day in office in January 1907. Even though these individuals rose to great political power, they did not forget their combat memories or neglect their old military comrades. Their war experiences shaped their vision and beliefs. These leaders had fascinating stories that correspond with practically all significant Civil War military experiences, whether serving in ranks from private to major general, suffering multiple wounds (and even an amputation), or passing through military service without a scratch. Soldiers to Governors relates these experiences and offers a visual celebration of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commissions Civil War collections. These treasures of the Commonwealths history will become your keepsake in this deluxe hardbound edition. Saylors book tells the fascinating stories that the leaders of the post-Civil War era had, that correspond with practically all significant Civil War military experiences, whether serving in ranks from private to major general and suffering multiple wounds, or passing through without a scratch.
