Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - At the center of Jamaican-born Michelle Cliff's novels is the exploration of the interplay between memory and history. Noraida Agosto examines Cliff's representation of memory as the part of history that has been suppressed because of its revolutionary potential. Memories of slave rebellions, for instance, were erased through omission from official historical accounts to discourage resistance among slaves. Cliff's novels are an attempt to recover these erased memories, which could generate resistance to modern oppressions. This recovery of devalued memories also entails a validation of non-elite beliefs, languages, and art forms in order to debunk dominant practices.
Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Queens' Encounter is the first scholarly work to examine the anachronistic meeting between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor in a coherent, international manner. First showing the encounter in the exchange of correspondence between the two queens, Paulson follows the development of an implied anachronism in seventeenth-century France and Spain to the actual depiction of the fictitious interview sequence in Diamante's La reina María Estuarda; the work then shows the 'improvement' in the anachronism in the hands of such varied authors as Boursault, Schiller and Donizetti. The epilogue shows some post-Schillerian variations on the theme, to include works by Maxwell Anderson, Lebrun and others.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book focuses on Henry IV of France as he is presented in selected works by Voltaire, Alfred de Vigny, Alexandre Dumas père, and George Sand. The book depicts King Henry from his earliest years until his assassination, and shows how Henry was a dominant figure in life and an overwhelming figure as a memory in the minds of his descendants and his subjects. Special mention is made of the St. Bartholomew's Day's Massacre, the conquest of the throne, the Edict of Nantes, the religious conversions, and the ladies and multiple offspring of King Henry. This book will be of interest to students of both nineteenth-century French literature and sixteenth-century French history courses, as a text or as a supplement.
