Bij elk van haar kinderen dat stierf, herinnert ze zich nog de kleur van het licht dat door het raam op het westen viel op het moment dat de dood binnensloop, steevast op kousenvoeten door de achterdeur. Kempenaar en voormalig hoofd van Vredeseilanden Jan Aertsen besloot na de dood van zijn vader in 2014 om zoveel mogelijk verhalen uit het leven van zijn pionierende boerenfamilie van de vergetelheid te redden. Hij sprak met getuigen en achterblijvers, las historische werken, wroette in archieven en in zijn eigen geheugen. Samen vormen deze puzzelstukken een bont familieportret van durvers en doeners, van dromers en piekeraars. Maar het boek werd meer, het werd een beeld van Vlaanderen in de uitgerekte 20ste eeuw, van zijn boeren en notarissen, zijn oorlogen en zijn kerken, zijn burgemeesters en zijn kleine mensen.
