Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Iris Gray knows witches aren't welcome in most towns. When she was forced to leave her last home, she left behind a father who was no longer willing to start over. And while the Witches' Council was lenient in their punishment, Iris knows they're keeping tabs on her. Now settled in Washington, Iris never lets anyone see who she really is; instead, she vents her frustrations by writing curses she never intends to cast. Otherwise, she spends her days at the wildlife refuge which would be the perfect job if not for Pike Alder, the witch-hating aspiring ornithologist who interns with them. Iris concocts the perfect curse for Pike: one that will turn him into a witch. But just as she's about to dispel it, a bird swoops down and steals the curse before flying away. If the bird dies, the curse will be unleashed?and the bird is a powerful amplifier, and unleashing the curse would turn not just Pike, but everyone in the region, into a witch. New witches have no idea how to control their magic and the consequences would be dire. The Witches' Council does not look kindly on multiple offenses; if they found out, Iris could be stripped of her magic for good. Iris begs Pike to help her track the bird, and they set out on a trek through the Pacific Northwest looking for a single bird that could destroy everything.

Auction catalogue (42 x 17 cm); pen annotations in a contemporary hand throughout, two small note papers tipped in to p.3, very light damp staining to margins; original stitched binding loose but holding, edges with tears; 9, [1]pp. A rare auction catalogue listing items ranging from '400 bags saltpetre' to '6 chests rhubarb' to '6 bales Tripoli madder root.' Inscribed in the upper left corner as belonging to Messrs. Howard Jewel and Co., the company's representative carefully noted the price and often the purchaser of each item. The tincal (crude, native borax) seems to have been a particular item of interest for the holder of this brochure; receipts attached to p.3 relate to the delivery of samples of the chests up for sale. 'Auction by candle' or 'sale by inch of candle' was one of the normal ways in which auctions were organised until about the turn of the 19th century. There are two main variations. In one a short candle (usually about an inch) is lit and bidding continues until it goes out, and the last bid made before it goes out is the one that stands. Alternatively, a pin or nail is stuck into a lighted candle, and the bidding stops when it falls out. The present catalogue is a relatively late example, the practice generally dying out around the end of the eighteenth century.

In the South hundred year old pecan orchards pass from generation to generation, magnolias and azaleas bloom, and the sun rises and sets on rocking chairs and sweet tea. In the midst of this timeless tradition lies a deep dark gypsy scandal full of mystery, murder, rape, and revenge. Charlie Williams, a United States History professor at the University of South Carolina, half Southern socialite, half gypsy, is caught in a scandal when her father, the leader of a gypsy clan, is accused of terrorism and the FBI investigates. When Charlie is kidnapped, gypsy revenge includes torture and murder on Lake Murray. A lovers' triangle emerges when Charlie's ex-husband, Mitch, leads the FBI investigation against her father, and her former, boyfriend, Kale, a gypsy, is suspected in the terrorism plot with her father. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 1934, Confessing Christians in Germany declared that support for the Nazi regime violated the basic principles of the Christian faith, thereby creating a status confesionis(confessional situation), requiring a binding doctrinal stance on sociopolitical questions. In this book, the result of a lifetime of engaged religious, philosophical, and critical inquiry, David Ray Griffin declares that with regard to American Empire, the church in America is in a similarly dire situation and must stand up for the integrity of the Gospel.Chapter by chapter (in some cases, verse by verse) Griffin argues that Christians in America must deal with the darker side of their country, especially its imperialism, racism, and nuclear and climate policies. With clarity and insight, Griffin points out ways in which the American Empire is similar to the Roman Empirethe empire that crucified Jesusand urges Christians, 'publicly and unequivocally' to reject it.Written from the perspective of process theology, the book is 'liberal in method and conservative in content.' 'Liberal in method' means that all appeals to authority to establish truth are rejected. Theology, like philosophy, can argue for the truth of its doctrines only on the basis of evidence and reason. So although the reality of revelation can be affirmed, theologians cannot make claims for the truth of events or doctrines by claiming that this truth was revealed. It is 'conservative in content' by virtue of employing a constructive postmodern worldview, based on the process philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. Being 'conservative in content' does not mean affirming the types of conservative theology that allow secondary and tertiary doctrines to distort the gospel's primary doctrines. It means reaffirming primary doctrines of the Christian gospel, such as God's creation of the world, God as actively present in us, and divinely given life after death.American Christianity is in crisis. In this timely book, David Ray Griffin preaches the Gospelnot interpreted for the convenience of Americans, but to remind Americans of what the Gospel actually says and what it calls us to do.
