8vo; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. xx + 412, incl. index; plates. A little foxing to edges, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "The Last Trek - A New Beginning is a frank and revealing autobiography which reflects both the author and his role during a remarkable period of history. On becoming State President of South Africa in 1989, F. W. de Klerk set about dismantling apartheid, the system by which white South Africans had tried to entrench their right to ethnic self-determination in an overwhelmingly black continent. By releasing Nelson Mandela from prison in February 1990, he set in motion a chain of events which would lead to the first fully democratic elections in South Africa's history, on 27 April 1994. This is the inside story of the South African miracle by the man who sacrificed his own power to make it happen.".…

Paperback. Condition: Good. 411 pages. cover worn, On April 27, 1994, millions of South Africans stood in mile-long queues for h ours to cast their votes in the country's first democratic election. F.W. de Kle rk, the last apartheid president, must have known his party would lose and that he was effectively handing the power of the volk to the African National Congres s and its leader, Nelson Mandela. De Klerk's motivation for writing The Last Tre k appears to be to show this surrender of power as the act of the country's gre at reformer. The book is also an attempt to reassure the volk that this is not the end for them--merely a fresh challenge. De Klerk was brought up as an Afrika ner nationalist and his view of the world was shaped by racism. He unapologetica lly tells how, as a young man, he was impressed with Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd's plan s to create separate black homelands and was relieved when Nelson Mandela was se ntenced to life imprisonment. Throughout the time he was a nationalist parliamen t member, minister, and later president, de Klerk insists, he did not know about his government's reign of terror and its attendant massacres and death squads. (Though he was a compassionate reformer and lawyer, it seems unbelievable that he did not try harder to find out if the allegations were true.) He does apolog ize for apartheid crimes--but urges they should be seen in context of the cold w ar and his political background, as well as in comparison with other a weak apol ogy, indeed. The Last Trek offers interesting insights into de Klerk's mind, but its most interesting material may well be its description of how his relationsh ip with Mandela deteriorated, leading to the collapse of the coalition governmen t--an event that angered de Klerk's colleagues because it caused a rift in the p.…
