He started his career as a librarian, and spent 29 years at The Robert Gordon University, mostly as librarian for the School of Architecture and Construction, and the School of Art. He retired early and spent five seasons as a guide for the National Trust for Scotland at the iconic fairytale castle of Craigievar.
