Contact seller5-star sellerThird edition (as stated upon copyright page). 64 pages plus covers. Staple-bound paperback: H 19.5cm x L 13.25cm. Dark yellow covers toned, soiled, and stained with creases; edge-scuffs to covers and spine; 1cm tear at front cover's top left. Toned text block edges have stains which also affect some leaves at margins. Past owner's embossed stamp to upper fore-edge corner of half-title/frontis; some creased corners; jagged tear to pages 49-50; some other stains and soiling to leaves. Binding staples remain firm. Only a good copy but MME. BEGUE'S RECIPES remains a classic New Orleans cookbook. First published by Harmanson in 1937, this third edition was issued circa 1938-1939 (the cookbook's successive fourth printing was published in late 1939/early 1940). Emigrating from Germany to New Orleans in 1853 to join her brother who was employed as a butcher in the city's French Market, Elizabeth Kettenring married Louis Dutreuil and in 1863 they opened Dutrey's Coffee House at the corner of Decatur and Madison Streets in the Vieux Carre. With their primary clientele being French Market early morning shift workers, Madame Begue started serving a 11 a.m. multi-course second breakfast which quickly earned the moniker "brunch," a term which was soon dispersed to the world via the innumerable visitors to the port city during the 1884 Cotton Exposition and tourist promotion by the Southern Pacific Railroad. After Dutreuil died in 1875 Kettenring married bartender Hippolyte Begue and, in 1880, the coffeehouse/eatery changed its name to Begue's operating past Elizabeth's 1906 death to approximately 1914 when competitor Tujague's Restaurant purchased the building (429 Decatur Street) and where that New Orleans institution still remains in business today. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 16mo, red printed pictorial wrappers, 74, vi pp. Numerous vignette text illustrations. The recipes occupy pp. 50-74 and are printed, variously, in English and French, before which appears an amazing recitation of her typical breakfast menus, prior to which is an engaging prose essay on sundry, related topics of interest. The author's fascinating, extensive biography can be sourced from Kelton Sears' research at the Historic New Orleans Collection. Begue is chiefly memorialized these days for having happened upon the then novel notion of introducing the concept of a "brunch" to the menu of tradespeople. She also ran a successful restaurant in New Orleans for decades. The present work does not appear in any of the standard culinary bibliographies. A Very Good copy.…
