The first reference to engraving with a diamond, of which we know, is to be found in a sermon by Johann Mathesius (1504-1565), the friend and biographer of Martin Luther, who left Witten-berg to become pastor at Joachimstal, a mining centre in the Erz Gebirge mountains, on the borders of Germany and Czecho Slovakia to the north of Carlsbad. Here he preached sermons to the miners which Edward Dillon aptly describes as " a strange mixture of what to us seem fantastic analogies drawn from the Bible, with matter of an eminently practical nature relating to the crafts and occupations of his audience."
