Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Some tanning wear and marking due to age. Limited edition 40 of 250. Year 1929. Hardcover. English. See images for condition. About the book >.>.> In various public and private collections there are glasses made and en-graved by the Romans with a sharp instrument, probably a flint, but we know of no engraving being done from the time of the fall of the Roman Empire until the 16th century. The first reference to engraving with a diamond, of which we know, is to be found in a sermon by Johann Mathesius (1504-1565), the friend and biographer of Martin Luther, who left Witten-berg to become pastor at Joachimstal, a mining centre in the Erz Gebirge mountains, on the borders of Germany and Czecho Slovakia to the north of Carlsbad. Here he preached sermons to the miners which Edward Dillon aptly describes as " a strange mixture of what to us seem fantastic analogies drawn from the Bible, with matter of an eminently practical nature relating to the crafts and occupations of his audience." The title of his fifteenth sermon suggests his methods of appealing to his listeners: "Of glass and the making of glass, and pa.
