Sie resultiert sicherlich aus dem gewachsenen Mißtrauen gegenüber,abstrakten geschichts- und gesellschaftstheoretischen Konstruktionen, deren zeitdiagnostische Optik mehr und mehr als verstellt erscheint. Sie resultiert aber auch aus Verschiebungen innerhalb des kulturellen Kräftefeldes selbst. Die Skepsis, mit der heute die Errungenschaften der ,wissenschaftlich-techni-schen Zivilisation in den Blick genommen werden, findet in der Reaktuali-sierung des Kulturbegriffs einen immer auch polemischen Halt. Es sieht so aus, als ob die alten Gegnerschaften zwischen Kultur und Zivilisation, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft, zwischen dem Allgemeinen und Besonderen erneut zur Entscheidung stünden. In diesen Streitstrukturen nahm und nimmt die Kultursoziologie einen besonderen Platz ein; weniger durch einen klar umrissenen Gegenstandsbereich definiert - wie etwa sollte man sie von Religions-, Wissens- und Sprachsoziologie, von Ethnologie oder Kulturgeschichte abgrenzen - bezeichnet sie eher den Raum, in dem moderne Gesellschaften versuchen, sich selbst zu "verstehen".
