The author provides an excellent account of the social and polit…ical conditions in the newly formed republic, which at the time was bankrupt and yet possessed vast, untapped mineral wealth that the European powers were eager to exploit. As the book progresses, the author uses his personal experiences to critique the Transvaal government, which he found to be corrupt, inefficient, and autocratic, with the cynical President Paul Kruger at its heart. The author concludes that for all its faults, the Transvaal had the potential to be a great nation, and he laments the fact that the Boer leaders squandered this potential and ultimately brought about the country's downfall.
