This famed hybridizer was legendary in the specialized world of rose cultivation and served as director of research for Jackson & Perkins, the renowned California rose cultivator; he was responsible for developing an astonishing 110 rose varieties, two of which ("Medallion" and "Red Masterpiece") were chosen by the U.S. Post Office for a special stamp issued in 1978. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Shreveport, Louisiana on July 11, 1978 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Eight 15-cent rose stamps affixed. No decorative cachet or distracting recipient's name/address. Warriner signs boldly in black ballpoint right on the "sweet spot." Extremely attractive and surprisingly uncommon. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present.
