With his mythical depictions of demons and fabulous creatures, the Austrian graphic artist and illustrator Alfred Kubin (1877- 1959) was an early representative of surrealism. Like other followers of this early 20th century movement, he rejected purely rational behaviour and explored the depths of the unconscious instead. In 1909, he published his novel The Other Side, (Die Andere Seite) a classic example of the fantastic genre that tells a cryptically absurd story of a dream kingdom in decline, replete with references to metaphysics and gnostic philosophy. Borrowing the novel's title, the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum has put on an exhibition showing early works by Alfred Kubin alongside outstanding examples of contemporary art. The exhibition is designed in a way that aims to stimulate the imagination, and to highlight hints of surrealism in international contemporary artworks. Neu -Der Umzug nach Berlin Ende 1911 brachte den expressionistischen Maler Ernst Ludwig Kirchner zu einer Veränderung seines Malstils: Die runden, weichen Zeichnungen der Dresdner Jahre wurden zunehmend von nervös und kantig wirkenden Formelementen abgelöst. Entsprechend bestimmen harte Schraffuren und spitze Formen die Motive des wohl 1913 entstandenen doppelseitig bemalten Gemäldes, das der Kölner Sammler Wilhelm Hack spätestens 1957 erworben hat. Während eines Sommerurlaubs auf der Ostseeinsel Fehmarn malte Kirchner zunächst Badende auf Fehmarn, anschließend nutzte er, zurück in Berlin, die Rückseite für seine berühmte Version des Urteils des Paris. In der kühl-aggressiven Stimmung seiner Großstadtszenen erscheint hier der Maler selbst als Paris, der zwischen drei Frauen wählen muss. Dabei handelt es sich um Erna Schilling, Kirchners spätere Lebensgefährtin, und ihre Schwester Gerda, die zweimal - in der Mitte und links - portraitiert ist. It consists of office blocks, a number of residential buildings, and a strip of green space. Arne Schmitt refrains from photographing the area in a descriptive mode, preferring instead to condense its functionality and semantics into black-and-white photographs of thirty-four signs and logos. To this end, he took pictures of fourteen street signs named after figures from the Bauhaus, who in turn have a questionable relationship to the urban environment around them. This compact constellation of signs provides the framework for Schmitt's work. Short texts chronicling the planning and economic background complete this stocktaking of an ahistorical area, whose more recent history also includes the long-running photographic project Areal by photographer Joachim Brohm.Zeichen der Zeit is published in conjunction with the exhibition Arne Schmitt - Räson, which runs from 15 February to 19 April 2020 at the Wilhelm Hack Museum's Rudolf Scharpf Gallery in Ludwigshafen.Arne Schmitt lives and works in Cologne.
