Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Foreword by Jim Wight, son of James Herriot and author of The Real James Herriot James Herriot became, through his writing, the most famous veterinarian in the world. Two things, to me, stand out as integral to his worldwide success as an author: his books are not just about vets treating animals, they are about people, and he writes about others, not just himself. Malcolm Welshman's book, Pets in a Pickle, is, too, not just a collection of animals stories. The author paints a vivid picture of many fascinating characters - human and animal - resulting in a most enjoyable and amusing read. The veterinary profession is one enriched by the most interesting and challenging situations, wherein the veterinary surgeon is confronted by a variety of unforgettable characters. MalcolmWelshman's experiences as a young veterinary surgeon, recounted in a most readable way, illustrate this very well. It is often said that vets have little interest in books or TV programmes about other members of their profession. It is regarded as 'old hat', revealing nothing new. I did not find this to be the case with this book. The author describes his early life in practice in a most entertaining way. The book is extremely easy to read and the text gives the reader a most enjoyable insight into the unpredictable but fascinating life of the veterinary surgeon. I wish this book every success. _____________________________________________________________________ When Paul Mitchell arrives for his first day's work at Prospect House Veterinary Hospital, he never expects this.Oh his very first day, he is bitten by a feisty hamster.but this is a mere prelude to a cavalcade of hilarious - and often painful - encounters with fish, flesh and fowl. From stalking a feral cat to rescuing a cow stuck in a gravel pit, life is never short of animal adventures for the newly qualified vet. On top of treating all manner of creatures at the practice, Paul and his girlfriend Lucy, also nurse a host of waifs and strays back to health at their home. Besides six budgerigars, two love birds, a hoard of guinea pigs and three tabby cats, their menagerie includes Gertie the Goose, whose talent for house security saves her from the Christmas Day table, and Nelson, their lovable - and stone deaf - Jack Russell. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. When young vet Paul Mitchell is bitten by a hamster on his first day in practice, he wonders what he's let himself in for. He finds out on a roller-coaster ride that sees him battling with bald cockatoos, stalking feral cats and chasing hot-foot after a lame camel.Set in a Sussex animal hospital, against the backcloth of the South Downs, Paul is destined to meet such eccentric characters as Mildred Millichip with her out-of-date remedies, and the actress, Francesca Cavendish, famous for her cat adverts; and there's no forgetting Madge and Rose Stockwell, two sisters who live a slow-paced life on a Downsland farm with no time for a 'vet in a hurry'."Pets in Prospect" takes the reader with Paul on his often hilarious ride through six months in the hospital where a hawk-eyed, but one-eyed, elderly receptionist rules the roost, and a swearing mynah bird and an anaconda in the fridge are not out of place.Through Paul's zany encounters with clients and their pets, we experience with him the highs and lows of a life revolving around the animals. Spinning with funny stories, "Pets in Prospect" is well worth the ride. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Things haven't calmed down for vet, Paul Mitchell, since we last joined him at Prospect House Veterinary Hospital. Continuing his fun-filled exploits, he's spellbound by a medium with her spooked cat and tricked by a magician with his poorly rabbit, not to mention his encounter with trophy hunting cats, a runaway fox and a gored ostrich, who all add to the parade of pets that weave a colourful path through Paul's rollercoaster life. No less a challenge is his turbulent relationship with the vet nurse, Lucy, and how they cope with a cottage full of cats, an adorable Jack Russell called Nelson and an invasion of mice. Sparks fly on the arrival of Jodie, the daughter of the practice partners. But when Paul has to operate on his beloved parrots with the help of Jodie, it's the climax of another heartfelt chapter in this young vet's exploits.…
