Colin Webber (illustrator). New York: Riverhead Books:, 2024. First edition, Hardcover, New in dust jacket, 386 pp. Cover artwork by: Colin Webber Terrific. Heard the interview with Carey on NPR. Fascinating, just like this novel. "The year is 1901. England's beloved queen has died, and her aging son has finally taken the throne. In the eastern city of Norwich, bright and inquisitive young Edith Holler spends her days among the boisterous denizens of the Holler Theatre, warned by her domineering father that the playhouse will literally tumble down if she should ever leave its confines. Fascinated by tales of the city she knows only from afar, she decides to write a play of her own: a stage adaptation of the legend of Mawther Meg, a monstrous figure said to have used the blood of countless children to make the local delicacy known as Beetle Spread. But when her father suddenly announces his engagement to a peculiar, imposing woman named Margaret Unthank, heir to the actual Beetle Spread fortune, Edith scrambles to protect her father, the theatre, and her play - the one thing that's truly hers - from the newcomer's sinister designs." Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 82 pages with a folding map of the rivers showing the level of fall and a litho engraved frontispiece, original gilt embossed cloth bevelled edges, a little minor foxing to the folds on the reverse of the map, a little wear to the front hinge where the paper has cracked at the gutter both minor issues for age of the book, otherwise and very good+ copy of this scarce travel/exploration book. Octavo. 1873. *NOTES: The falls were noticed by Europeans in 1870 by a party led by Charles Barrington Brown, a British geologist appointed as a government surveyor to the colony of British Guiana. He did not have time to investigate Kaieteur Falls closely, so he returned one year later to make comprehensive measurements. Brown's book Canoe and Camp life in British Guiana was published in 1876. Two years later, in 1878, he published Fifteen Thousand Miles on the Amazon and its tributaries. The book here pre-dates Brown's work and seems a forgotten little title and work. Only this one edition recorded. There was a George Daniel Webber who was made Lt-Colonel in 1872 in the same regiment? Worth a little more research perhaps? This above name as listed was taken from the BL copy, but a strange coincidence.
