Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. How night has shaped architectural planning throughout historyFor centuries, architectural theory, discourse and agency have been based on diurnal and solar paradigms. References to night in Vitruvius's De architectura are few, and the same absence is notable in Renaissance treatises by Alberti or Palladio. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that the invention and institutionalization of artificial light in private and public spaces gradually transformed conceptions of night in the architectural discipline. This volume offers the first attempt at a nocturnal history of architecture. What emerges from the studies is the thesis that the identity of human beings--across time and their domestic, professional and cultural spaces--is powerfully determined by the parameters of nighttime. By analyzing and studying "night scenes," this book reveals how the night is a laboratory for the development of new forms of conceptualizing space and, ultimately, of living. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. 112 pp. Englisch.

Hardback. Condition: New. Surrealism expanded our reality by drawing upon myths, dreams, and the subconscious as sources of artistic inspiration. Beginning in the 1930s, the movement made a crucial impact on design, and it continues to inspire designers to this day. »Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design« is the first book to document this fascinating conversation. It includes numerous essays and a comprehensive selection of images which traces these reciprocal exchanges by juxtaposing exemplary artworks and design objects. Among the featured artists and designers are Gae Aulenti, Achille Castiglioni, Giorgio de Chirico, Le Corbusier, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, ntoni Gaudí, Frederick Kiesler, René Magritte, Carlo Mollino, Meret Oppenheim, and many others. The book is rounded off with historical text material as well as short texts and statements by contemporary designers. This in- depth examination makes one thing abundantly clear: form does not always follow function - it can also follow our obsessions, our fantasies, and our hidden desires.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Mit Werken u.a. von Gae Aulenti, André Breton, Achille Castiglioni, Le Corbusier, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Dunne & Raby, Ray Eames, Max Ernst, Front Design, Iris van Herpen, Friedrich Kiesler, Shiro Kuramata, René Magritte, Lee Miller, Carlo Mollino, Isamu Noguchi, Odd Matter, Meret Oppenheim, Mimi Parent, Gaetano Pesce, Man Ray, Robert Stadler, Studio Wieki Somers. 368 pp. Englisch.
