Paperback. Condition: New. Recent years have seen an alarming rise in antiintellectual outbursts by politicians, documented threats against radical scholars across continents, and serious blows to the fundamental right of scientific freedom. Scientific Freedom under Attack is an edited volume that ties together proceedings of the international conference on "The Problems of Scientific Freedoms in Modern and Contemporary History", which was held at the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, on in November 2018. Covering a broad geographic and temporal span, stretching from the early nineteenth century through the Cold War and on to the neoliberal era, from Eurasia to China and to the United States, it presents an illuminating and important panorama of the political and structural challenges that scientific production and critical thinking continue to face. As these forces continue to attack scientific freedom, this volume offers necessary and critical analysis of their emergence.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, xii + 189 pages, NOT ex-library. A short crease to the side edge of first leaves, book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show gentle handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This study examines the intertwined experiences of political displacement and professional instability, situating the case of Turkey's exiled 'Academics for Peace' within the broader political economy of neoliberal academic precarity. The analysis frames these displaced scholars not as a unique political anomaly but as a particularly acute manifestation of a global 'academic surplus labor force' created by the commodification of intellectual work. The central inquiry focuses on subjectivity, analyzing the mechanisms of 'de-subjectivation' - the erosion of agency and willpower under pervasive uncertainty - and exploring the potential for 're-subjectivation'. A key theoretical contribution is the proposed synthesis of two approaches to regaining agency: one rooted in the transformative power of mourning and confronting loss, and another in a Spinozian affirmative ethics that converts negative experience into a source of strength. The work delves into the lived experience of exile as a 'purgatory' of being 'kept in reserve,' a state of profound in-betweenness characterized by a 'non-place,' 'non-time,' and 'non-position.' It investigates the psychological state of 'interrupted mourning' as a critical obstacle to be overcome. Ultimately, the study is an inquiry into the 'recovery of the will,' exploring the limits and opportunities for displaced scholars to forge new forms of collegial solidarity and intellectual production outside of traditional institutions. Employing a self-reflexive methodology that combines sociological analysis with personal narrative and participatory research, the book rejects a simple researcher-subject dichotomy to offer an account from within the crisis itself.
