Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1998 County Down Museum paperback edition. Some reading wear, crease to back cover else good condition. Though inspired by the noble principles of liberty, equality and brotherhood, the United Irishmen's rebellion of 1798 plunged Ireland into a vortex of violence and bloodshed, the effects of which can still be felt today. The ferocity of the insurrection and the manner of its suppression have prompted the pens of both eulogists and detractors. The bicentenary of the rising allows historians of the period to have their say.Dressed in their Sunday clothes The United Irishmen of county Down who turned out in the oppressive heat of June 1798 at Newtownards, Portaferry, Saintfield and Ballynahinch were mainly Presbyterian. With the radical pronouncements of many of their clergy ringing in their ears, they donned their finest clothes to fight for Ireland. Ranged against them were the powerful forces of conservatism in the county. This book recounts the story of the rebellion in Down, its origins and its outcome.
