Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An introduction to the avant-garde jazz posters of a leading Swiss graphic designer. One of Europe's leading poster designers, Niklaus Troxler (born 1947) has devoted himself primarily to jazz posters. In 1966, the Swiss designer organised the first jazz concert in his hometown of Willisau, Lucerne. In 1975 he founded an annual jazz festival that has since brought both established and younger artists to the stage. Troxler designed countless posters for these festivals, as well as for the individual concerts. His early designs embraced an illustrative style from which he soon emancipated himself, eventually translating the character of experimental music and taking up its improvisational gestures. On the occasion of Troxler's 75th birthday, this publication presents a selection of his jazz posters, juxtaposing them with sociopolitical manifestos in poster form, mostly commissioned by himself, as well as public commissions, including those for the Olma agricultural fair, the Knie circus and the Geneva International Motor Show. SELLING POINTS: . Niklaus Troxler (born 1947) is a Swiss graphic designer and founder of the annual Willisau Jazz Festival in Switzerland. His designs center on jazz and capture the essence of music in a visual form . This is part of Lars Mueller's affordable Poster Collection series. It highlights Troxler's experimentations with type and his translations of experimental sound into cutting-edge poster design 109 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Buch. Condition: Neu.

Hardcover, 21 x 13.5cm, 240 pages including 103 colour posters, pictorial endpapers, NOT ex-library. Interior is clean and bright throughout, untanned, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show gentle handling wear. Dust jacket with a puncture/small rip, a bit of rubbing to the edges. -- Niklaus Troxler, Swiss graphic designer and longtime director of the Willisau Jazz Festival since its inception in 1971, presents a retrospective collection of his festival posters spanning two decades. The book reproduces over 100 posters designed for performances by jazz luminaries including McCoy Tyner, Dexter Gordon, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Dewey Redman, Don Pullen, Nat Adderley, Woody Shaw, Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman, Dave Holland, Hermeto Pascoal, Aki Takase, and many others, capturing the festival's ecumenical spirit that embraced free jazz, fusion, and avant-garde. Troxler's designs exemplify the Swiss International Typographic Style through stark sans-serif typography, asymmetrical layouts, high-contrast photography, and innovative use of colour overlays and spot varnish, evolving from musician portraits in the 1970s to abstract, music-evoking graphics by the 1980s.
