Paperback. Condition: New. This collection of essays commemorates the Parnells of Avondale and simultaneously uses the theme of commemoration to provide an insight into the shifting relationship between history and memory in the case of Charles Stewart Parnell and his family. The essays by two leading Irish historians have an el…egiac tone. The authors show an elegant and sympathetic appreciation of Parnell's career and of how he has been viewed in Irish history since his death in 1891. Parnell's nationalism is explored and his political speeches, the significance of his sojourn in Kilmainham, his American connections, his funeral and the rise and decline of 'Ivy day' and other commemorations after his death. The authors also look at the careers of the Parnell women: his mother Delia and his sisters Anna and Fanny who were both political activists and involved in the Ladies' Land League; and his relationship with Katharine O'Shea, later his wife. There is also an essay on his brother and biographer, John Howard Parnell. The essays throw new light on the Parnell family and their place in Irish history. They will be valuable reading for students of nineteenth-century Ireland, the Parnell family and the debate on 'commemoration history'.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The political events of the decade of revolution in Donegal examined in this book are set firmly in the context of the underlying social and economic background. The experiences of the different regions in a disparate county are highlighted, as well as the conflicting loyalties of unionists,… home rulers, and separatists. Religion and the shadow of partition loom large. The emergence of rival paramilitary groups of Irish and Ulster Volunteers in response to the home rule bill threatened to spill over into communal conflict. This was averted, at least temporarily, by the outbreak of the First World War which had a profound impact. The IRA campaign in Donegal began slowly but grew in intensity during 1920-1. The imposition of partition had a deep and abiding impact in Donegal, not least on the unionist community in border areas, and contributed to the bitterness and intensity of the split in the nationalist movement over the Treaty and of the Civil War which followed. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
