El título principal, a su vez, pretende transmitir la idea de que hoy en día existen pocas plumas tan capaces como las de Pierre Toubert para comprender la Edad Media, ese término o concepto que no necesita ninguna adjetivación geográfica so pena de incurrir en la tautología, como hace tiempo advirtieron otros insignes medievalistas. El primero de dichos trabajos fue escrito en colaboración con Jacques Le Goff ?cuya reciente muerte ha segado la pretensión de que prologara este libro? y constituye un jalón fundamental para comprender la evolución de la historiografía medievalista desde mediados del siglo pasado. El último constituye un breve, y a la vez precioso, testimonio autobiográfico recogido en forma de entrevista por Nicolas Offenstadt, historiador comprometido y co-director de la revista en la que fue publicada. Entre ambos, quienes lean esta obra miscelánea encontrarán sabias reflexiones sobre la naturaleza de los documentos de los siglos centrales de la Edad Media y sobre algunos componentes básicos del mundo medieval (frontera, estructuras agrarias y eclesiásticas, cruzada), sin olvidar la comparación y relación que Europa occidental mantuvo con Bizancio y el islam. La última parte está dedicada a otro aspecto no menos esencial de la sociedad medieval como fue el de la percepción y la gestión de las crisis que la azotaron, sobre todo en el siglo XIV. LIBRO.
