Title leaf and 24 hand-colored photographic collotype plates, each protected by a tissue guard and captioned in English. Original publishers silk-covered boards, string-tied. An exceptionally evocative record of Japanese life at the beginning of the twentieth century, depicting young women engaged in games, music, garden pursuits, domestic activities, and marriage ceremonies. The richly hand-colored collotypes are characteristic of the sophisticated photographic production associated with the Tamamura studio and Teijiro Takagi. Contemporary sources identify this 1910 issue as the first printing; a later 1917 printing contained 23 plates and lacked the tissue guards. The present copy retains its original silk binding, with some wear, soiling, tears and a fold mark to the covers; internally near fine, with the binding tight and the photographs bright and clean. A highly desirable example of early twentieth-century Japanese color photography and the illustrated souvenir album. An ILAB catalog describes the work as locating only a single institutional copy in the Japanese Diet Library. A particularly handsome and scarce survival of Takagis celebrated photographic documentation of Meiji-era Japanese life.…

The lovely photos show the various stages in processing the clay, including processes such as kneading, filtering and shaping the clay, and further depict the process of painting, coating and enamelling the wares. Inner hinge spit. Photos with light marginal browning, but internally generally nice and clean. 2 ff. + 20 coloured photographs with a two-line caption below in English. First edition this scarce photobook depicting various scenes from Japanese fishermens lives. OCLC only record three copies and copies rarely find their way into the trade. Takagi Teijiro (born circa 1875) trained under renowned photographer Kozaburo Tamamura and managed the Tamamura branch in Kobe until the early 20th century. He eventually took ownership of the store and gained the right to use the Tamamura name. Takagi is credited with producing over 30 English-language photobooks showcasing Japanese culture and customs. He continued using the Tamamura name until 1914, when he rebranded his business as the T. Takagi Photographic Studio & Art Gallery, which remained in operation until at least 1929.…

First edition, first printing, of this scarce photobook, with a single copy recorded on WorldCat (Museum Rietberg, Switzerland), and copies likewise seldom encountered in commerce. The high-quality captioned photographs show views of old commercial streets including Motomachi and the Kobe Bund, as well as waterfalls, Shinto shrines, the Moon Temple, the bustling theatre quarter, the city's large Buddhist idol erected in 1892, and the picturesque Himeji Castle. Takagi Teijiro (born c.1875) studied under the celebrated photographer Kozaburo Tamamura, managing the Tamamura branch store in Kobe until the 20th century when he became its owner and assumed the right to use the Tamamura name. He is known to have produced at least 30 different photobooks in English introducing Japanese culture and customs. Takagi continued to use the Tamamura name until 1914 when he began trading as the T. Takagi Photographic Studio & Art Gallery. His studio operated until at least 1929. This copy is signed on the front pastedown, "G. H. Lees", perhaps the G. H. Lees recorded as a partner of the Penang-based Pritchard & Co. department store in the early twentieth century. Landscape octavo. With 20 tissue-guarded hand-coloured collotypes after photographs by the author, folding advertising leaf at rear. Original gold thread musubi toji binding, illustrated boards, front cover lettered in silver, black silk at spine ends. Boards faded and rubbed at extremities, illustrations bright, pages slightly crinkled, faint tidemarks on couple of leaves slightly affecting images.
