[From front jacket flap] By concentrating in depth on a unique period when the Jacobites were attempting to gain their ends through conventional political action the author shows their influence on the mainstream of Toryism, and sheds new light on the vexed question of the extent to which the first Tory party was intrinsically committed to Jacobitism by the time of the Hanoverian succession in 1714.
