T. - Sir Charles Scott Sherrington (1857 - 1952), britischer Neurophysiologe, erhielt 1932 den Nobelpreis f. seine Entdeckungen auf dem Gebiet der Neuronen. Sein Interesse für das Nervensystem wurde 188…1 auf dem Internationalen Kongress für Medizin in London wachgerufen. Mit Untersuchungen an Nervensystemen von Tieren, die er zusammen mit John Newport Langley durchführte, begann seine Laufbahn als Neurophysiologe, 3 Jahre lang arbeitete er als undergraduate in Cambridge, 1884 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Bericht zusammen mit Langley. Nach der Ausbildung auf dem Kontonent (v. a. in Berlin) folgte seine erste Berufung als Dozent der Physiologie ans St.-Thomas-Hospital, später wurde er zum Professor u. ärztl. Direktor des Brown-Instituts ernannt. Danach folgte die Berufung auf dem Lehrstuhl der Physiologie in Liverpool. 1897 beschrieb er das Phänomen der Enthirnungsstarre zum ersten Mal in den Croonian-Vorlesungen. Für das Lehrbuch der Physiolgie von Michael Foster lieferte er ebenfalls einen Abschnitt. Dort führte er den Begriff "Synapse" in die Neurologie ein. 1906 erschien sein Buch über "die integrative Tätigkeit des Nervensystems" - ein Wendepunkt der experimentellen Physiologie des Menschen, viele neue Bezeichnungen werden noch heute verwendet. 1913 wurde er nach Oxford berufen, um den Lehrstuhl für Physiologie zu übernehmen. Nach Kriegsende befaßte er sich mit Forschungen über Mechanismen der Körperhaltung und mit der Erforschung der "myotischen Reflexe".
