Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Eeyore Finds the Wolery. A. A. Milne. Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. London: Magnet / Methuen Children's Books Ltd, 1982. Magnet paperback. ISBN 0 416 24680 X. A complete single story taken from The House at Pooh Corner (first published 1928), issued in Methuen's "Piglet paperbacks" series of short Pooh books for younger readers and for reading aloud. The chapter is the one in which Owl's house high in a tree is blown down in a gale; Rabbit leaves a misspelt notice that he is searching for a new house; Pooh composes a Respectful Song about Piglet; and Eeyore, after days of solitary meditation in his own corner of the Forest, announces that he has found "just the house for Owl." The house is Piglet's. Owl names it The Wolery. This Magnet edition reprints the text with E. H. Shepard's illustrations, including the later colouring of the line drawings (colouring copyrights 1973 and 1974, as stated on the copyright page). Front cover is the familiar bright yellow Magnet design showing Eeyore and Piglet; rear cover has Pooh and Piglet on the bench, the series blurb, original printed prices (UK 85p, Australia $2.95*, New Zealand $3.50) and the Magnet logo. Spine reads Milne / Eeyore finds the Wolery. Printed in Great Britain by Hazell Watson & Viney Ltd, Aylesbury, Bucks. First published in this edition 1977 by Methuen Children's Books Ltd; Magnet paperback edition first published 1982. 11 New Fetter Lane, London EC4P 4EE. Condition: Very Good used vintage paperback. Yellow card covers show creasing (notably lower front and general handling wear), light corner rub and the expected surface marks of a 1980s children's paperback. Spine is intact and the book remains firmly bound. Internals complete: half-title, title-page in the arched Magnet frame with small colour vignette of Eeyore, copyright and opening text, and the full run of colour and line illustrations. Mild age toning and the usual signs of a well-read copy. No writing or missing leaves noted. Photographs of the actual book form part of this description. About the author Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) was an English playwright, essayist and poet before the Pooh books overshadowed everything else he wrote. Winnie-the-Pooh appeared in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928. Both grew out of the nursery of his son, Christopher Robin Milne, and the stuffed animals that lived there: the bear (Winnie, after the Winnipeg bear at London Zoo), Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and later Tigger. Rabbit and Owl were Milne's own inventions. The stories are written in a precise, lightly ironic English that treats children's logic as a complete system. This slim Magnet volume isolates one of the best late chapters: Eeyore's mixture of neglect, dignity and accidental generosity, and Piglet's quiet bravery. About the illustrator Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976) was a Punch cartoonist and the defining artist of both Winnie-the-Pooh and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. His Pooh drawings were made from life in the sense that he used his own son's bear, Growler, as a model and worked from Milne's text rather than from Disney. The line is economical, the animals slightly shabby and wholly themselves. From the early 1970s Methuen issued coloured versions of those drawings; this Magnet paperback uses that coloured Shepard art. Shepard's name appears on the title-page as E. H. Shepard. A decent, complete example of an early-1980s Magnet Piglet paperback — not a first edition of the 1928 text, but a characteristic British children's reprint of the period, useful to collectors of Shepard-illustrated Pooh, Magnet paperbacks, or single-story Pooh extracts. Suitable as a reading copy or a nostalgic shelf copy. Questions welcome. Ernest Howard Shepard (illustrator).

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Piglet Meets a Heffalump Magnet paperback first published 1981; this copy reprinted 1981 and 1984 ISBN 0 416 21710 9 / 0416217109 / 9780416217100 Binding Softcover / paperback. Small format, approx. 6 x 7 inches (c.15.5 x 18 cm). Pink pictorial wrappers. Magnet logo to front and rear. Original printed price £1.25 net in UK only. Unpaginated (c.32 pages including prelims). Condition Very Good Used. Good reading copy. Pictorial wrappers show light surface scuffs, corner and edge wear, and modest rubbing consistent with age and handling. Spine intact and readable. Internals complete: no loose or missing leaves observed. Pages clean of annotation in the story text; light age-toning. Description A complete short story from A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh, issued as a standalone Magnet paperback for younger readers and for reading aloud. Christopher Robin mentions that he has seen a Heffalump. Pooh decides they must catch one by means of a Cunning Trap: a Very Deep Pit baited with honey. Piglet will dig; Pooh will fetch the hunny. Night, hunger, a jar that will not come off, counting Heffalumps instead of sheep, and Piglet's anxious bravery follow. The text is the original Milne chapter, not a Disney retelling. This is the Magnet "Piglet paperback" series: individual chapters extracted from the 1926 Methuen Winnie-the-Pooh, reset as small picture paperbacks with E. H. Shepard's decorations in colour. Rear wrapper lists companion Magnet titles including Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees, Pooh Goes Visiting and Pooh and Piglet Nearly Catch a Woozle, Eeyore Has a Birthday, Kanga and Baby Roo Come to the Forest, and An Expotition to the North Pole. Copyright and production notes as printed in this copy: story taken from Winnie-the-Pooh, originally published in Great Britain 14 October 1926 by Methuen & Co. Ltd. Text by A. A. Milne and line illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard copyright under the Berne Convention. United States copyright 1926 by E. P. Dutton & Co. Inc.; copyright renewal 1954 by A. A. Milne. Colouring of the illustrations copyright 1970 by Ernest H. Shepard and Methuen & Co. Ltd and 1973 by Ernest H. Shepard and Methuen Children's Books Ltd. First published in this edition 1975 by Methuen Children's Books Ltd. Magnet paperback edition first published 1981; reprinted 1981 and 1984. Printed and bound in Great Britain by Hazell Watson & Viney Limited, Aylesbury, Bucks, member of the BPCC Group. ISBN 0 416 21710 9. About the author Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) was an English playwright, poet and essayist who became, somewhat to his later discomfort, one of the most famous children's writers in the language. Born in Kilburn, London, and educated at Westminster and Trinity College, Cambridge, he wrote for Punch and had a successful West End career before the two Pooh books. Winnie-the-Pooh (Methuen, 14 October 1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928) grew from the nursery toys of his son, Christopher Robin Milne, and from Ashdown Forest. The Heffalump chapter is Chapter V of the first book: "In Which Piglet Meets a Heffalump." Milne also published When We Were Very Young (1924) and Now We Are Six (1927). About the illustrator Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976), known as E. H. Shepard, was a painter, Punch cartoonist and the original illustrator of both Winnie-the-Pooh and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. His line drawings defined Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and the rest for generations; later colouring of those decorations (as in this Magnet edition) was issued under copyright dated 1970 and 1973. He is often called "the man who drew Pooh.". Ernest Howard Shepard (illustrator).

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Magnet paperback, 1983 reprint of the 1982 Magnet edition. Blue pictorial wrappers featuring Piglet at the window of his house. Magnet logo to lower cover. Original printed price 95p. ISBN 0 416 24480 7. Printed and bound in Great Britain by Hazell Watson & Viney Ltd, Aylesbury, Bucks. This standalone picture book reprints Chapter IX of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh (Methuen, 14 October 1926), the episode in which Piglet, a Very Small Animal, finds himself entirely surrounded by floodwater. After days of rain he writes a "missage" in a bottle — "HELP! PIGLIT (ME)" / "IT'S ME PIGLIT, HELP HELP!" — and throws it from the window. Pooh, marooned with his honey pots on a branch, recovers the bottle, cannot read it, and later joins Christopher Robin in a makeshift boat (The Floating Bear / Brain of Pooh) to effect the rescue. The text is the original Milne wording, with Shepard's line drawings coloured for this children's format. Edition history as stated on the copyright page: text and line illustrations copyright under the Berne Convention; US copyright 1926 by E. P. Dutton & Co.; renewal 1954 by A. A. Milne; colouring of the illustrations copyright 1973 by Ernest H. Shepard and Methuen Children's Books Ltd; first published in this edition 1976 by Methuen Children's Books Ltd; Magnet paperback first published 1982; reprinted 1983. One of the "Piglet Paperbacks in Magnet Books" series, which excerpted complete stories from Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner for younger readers and reading aloud. Condition: Very Good used copy, consistent with a well-handled early-1980s children's paperback. Covers show minor creasing, corner bumps, edge-rubbing, light surface marks and some fading to the blue wrappers; Internally complete; pages age-toned in places with the usual handling wear of a read copy; no ownership inscriptions noted in the photographed leaves; binding holding. Please judge from the photographs, which show the actual book offered. A. A. Milne (Alan Alexander Milne, 1882-1956) was an English playwright, essayist and Punch contributor whose lasting fame rests on four children's books created around his son Christopher Robin and the nursery toys of Cotchford Farm and Ashdown Forest: When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Before Pooh he was a successful West End dramatist; afterwards the books overshadowed the rest of his work. The flood episode is among the most anthologised Pooh chapters, balancing anxiety, friendship and comic invention. Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976), Punch cartoonist and one of the principal British book illustrators of the twentieth century, drew the original Pooh decorations from 1924 onward, using his son's bear Growler among other models. His economical line, combined here with the 1973 authorised colouring undertaken with Methuen in his lifetime, is the visual identity of the "classic" rather than Disney Pooh. Shepard also illustrated Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. These Magnet paperbacks are useful working copies of that Shepard/Milne collaboration rather than fine firsts. Suitable for readers, 1980s nostalgia, or as a filling copy in a Shepard/Milne working collection. Further photographs on request. Ernest Howard Shepard (illustrator).
