Working primarily with paintingprincipally in serieshe also explores sculpture, drawing, film, printmaking, performance and installation. His multifaceted work is the offspring of an exceptionally intense relationship with the world. It is a place where images drawn from both personal and everyday sources interact; where disciplines such as dance, music and the visual arts converge. This first monograph on his oeuvre offers an overview of his practice, underlining his engagement in representation, expression of the self and the traditions of art and art history. As French art critic and curator Stephanie Moisdon states in her commissioned essay: "Hominal's oeuvre stands firm in the middle of the contemporary tumult, neither reveals nor conceals any hidden part. It stands there, in the entire coarseness of its appearance. No tongue-in-cheek humor, no false flooring, illusion or trickery. His painting expresses only what it shows, diverting the endeavors, as tiring as they are many, to clarify and reveal. In his work there is a constant oscillation between homage and dismantling, between too much and too little, between the elimination (of sources, of contexts) and the appropriation (of sensations, of intensities), from which bare forms arise." A second essay by Laurence Schmidlin, Musee Jenisch Deputy Director and Head of the Cabinet cantonal des estampes, analyzes Hominals practice and relationship to printmaking in the global context of his work.David Hominal was born in 1976 in Evian, France. He graduated from ECAL (Lausanne) and is now based in Berlin. He exhibited recently at Helmhaus, Zurich; Centre dart contemporain, Geneva; Kunsthalle Bern, Bern; and the Swiss Institute, New York. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Le Consortium, Dijon, and at Musee Jenisch Vevey (on the occasion of which this volume is published). Hardback. Condition: New. Unexpected events in the present can in the long term affect our view of both the past and the future. Dealing with this fundamental uncertainty as an artist characterises the work of Silvie Defraoui, born 1935, and also determines her Archives du Futur, the platform for artistic reflection she initiated in 1975 together with her late partner Chérif (1932-94).This elegant book features some 40 works that Defraoui has created since 1994, using the media of video, painting, neon, and photography. Some of them have been newly created for her major solo exhibition at the MCBA in Lausanne in the spring 2023 and are published in this book for the first time. All of them bear witness to continuous change and impressively illustrate the metamorphosis of the Archives du Futur, which has now been in existence for almost five decades. Laurence Schmidlin's essay offers a new approach to Defraoui's artistic ideas and concepts.Text in English, French and German.

Paperback. Condition: New. Brigitte Mavromichalis was born in Stockholm in 1926, into a family of higher Swedish society. At the age of 20 she was sent to Switzerland by her parents to pursue an academic education at the University of Lausanne. There she met her future husband, who was of Greek origin. The couple, who loved travelling and culture, kept their Swiss residence but toured the world and visited countless museums. After her husband's death in 1982, Mavromichalis continued to devote herself to her passion for art, music, and sport, excelled in bridge at an international level, and remained a discreet patron of the arts until her demise in 2015.She put together her art collection, which grew over the decades, in utter freedom and free of any hierarchy in media, style, and people. It consisted mainly of paintings, but also included drawings and prints, and was characterised by great diversity. In 2023, the Musée d'art du Valais in Sion received a bequest of 45 works from Brigitte Mavromichalis's collection. This book reflects the diversity of this legacy. It portrays the collector and her bequest: all these works are explained by distinguished art historians in concise texts.Text in French and German.

Paperback. Condition: New. Enraptured by Color presents some 170 French colour prints from the 19th century. Using colour at that time was a major factor in the market success of lithography, more than a century after its invention, as well as of other techniques. This new book, published to coincide with an exhibition at Musée Jenisch Vevey, is a compendium of the art of colour printmaking, using the exhibits as examples for all aspects of the trade. Introductory and topical essays and a selection of rare documents alongside the featured works reveal the effects of polychromy and the technical processes behind it in artistic production in France around 1890. The book explains in detail how colour engravings are made and how they differ from a colour print. It investigates the aesthetic purpose of using colour and how it was exploited by important artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Paul Gauguin, Odilon Redon, Paul Signac, Édouard Vuillard, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.Text in English and French.
