Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an insightful and engrossing account of the political career and legacy of William Sulzer, a prominent lawyer and reform-minded politician who served as the 41st Governor of New York State. The author, a close associate of Sulzer, provides a detailed account of Sulzer's life, highlighting his dedication to social, political, and economic reforms. The book explores Sulzer's early life, his entry into politics, and his remarkable achievements in the New York State Assembly and the United States Congress. It delves into Sulzer's progressive policies, his unwavering advocacy for the rights of the working class, and his fight against corruption and political bossism. The book also examines the controversial circumstances surrounding Sulzer's impeachment and removal from office, providing a nuanced perspective on this pivotal moment in New York State history. Through a rich exploration of Sulzer's speeches, legislative initiatives, and political battles, this book offers a valuable contribution to our understanding of Progressive Era politics, the fight for social justice, and the complexities of power and corruption in American politics. Our Weakened Constitution: An Historical and Analytical Study of the Constitution of the United State [sic] and of the Additions to the Original Text Undertaken to Place the Facts before the American People, and to Emphasize the Present Necessity for a Movement in Behalf of an Unviolated Constitution, State Integrity and the Rights and Immunities Established by the Founders of this Republic. New. $59.95 * Written in 1932, this book offers a liberal interpretation of a "living Constitution" and argues for the types of limits on the United States Constitution being considered today. Thomas: - interprets the 2nd amendment as a state rather than a federal issue - examines the question of substantive limits on the content of constitutional amendments - advances the novel idea that the Bill of Rights was only designed to limit the national government and not the states - proclaims the unconstitutionality of the 18th amendment which prohibited alcohol - questions equal state suffrage in the U.S. Senate, the extensive powers of the president, the four-year presidential election cycle, "the composition and tenure of the Federal Judiciary" and the authority of the U.S. Supreme Court. Samuel Bell Thomas [1869-1943] practiced law in New York. He graduated from the University of Texas and received his law degree from Southwestern University. He lost his bid for Congress as a New York Independence League candidate in 1910.

First Edition. First printing. Octavo. Publisher's gray-green cloth with gilt titles and pictorial pastedown to front cover; 456pp; illus. Slight discoloration and sun-fading to cloth, still a tight, clean copy, free of internal markings or wear - Very Good. A defense of the recently-impeached New York Governor William Sulzer, whose reformist and populist policies had put him at odds with the Tammany Hall regime, with predictable results. He remains the only New York governor ever to have been successfully impeached, though he did succeed in somewhat reviving his political career following his ouster from the Governor's mansion, running as a candidate for various offices under the auspices of a variety of third parties, including the Progressive Party and the Prohibition Party.
