Maxey was born in Kentucky and attended West Point before resettling in Texas and eventually becoming a Major General for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Among other battles, he fought in Vicksburg and Corinth, and received a presidential pardon after the war thanks to a personal appeal made to his former West Point classmate Ulysses S. Grant.…
