Similarly, the silk industry - from sericulture to the weaving of cloth - was one of the most important fields of production in the medieval and early modern world. The production and consumption of silks spread from China to Japan and Korea and travelled westward as far as India, Persia and theByzantine Empire, Europe, Africa and the Americas. As contributors to this book demonstrate, in this process of diffusion silk fostered technological innovation and allowed new forms of organization of labour to emerge. Its consumption constantly reshaped social hierarchies, gender roles, aesthetic and visual cultures,as well as rituals and representations of power. Threads of Global Desire is the first attempt at considering a global history of silk in the pre-modern era. The book examines the role of silk production and use in various cultures and its relation to everyday and regulatory practices. It considers silk as a major force of cross cultural interaction through technological exchange and trade in finished and semi-finished goods. Silks mediated design and a taste for luxuries and were part of gifting practices in diplomatic and private contexts. Silk manufacturing also fostered thecirculation of skilled craftsmen, connecting different centres and regions across continents and linking the countryside to urban production. Neuware - Este libro pretende subrayar y analizar una cuestión que, aunque fundamental, casi siempre ha quedado implícita o conscientemente ocultada en la producción académica, ya sea en la publicación de libros o artículos, en la disposición de las colecciones permanentes de los museos nacionales o…autonómicos, en las exposiciones temporales o en otros dispositivos discursivos relacionados con las manifestaciones artísticas: la relación íntima que hay entre la historiografía, en este caso específicamente arqueológica y artística, desde la Antigüedad hasta los estertores de la larga Edad Moderna, y los discursos en torno a la identidad nacional. Para poder vertebrar un asunto tan complejo, rico y, de hecho, tan oportuno en la coyuntura política actual, el volumen toma como referente la publicación del Museo pictórico y escala óptica (1715-1724) de Antonio Palomino, considerado como vórtice de la tradición historiográfica hispánica y jalón de la construcción de la identidad artística española a partir del cual se abordan, entre otros, asuntos como la llamada cultura ibérica; la relación de la identidad nacional con ciertos hallazgos arqueológicos convertidos en anacrónicos símbolos nacionales; la relevancia del Camino de Santiago en la consecución de esos discursos identitarios; la problemática en torno a los tejidos andalusíes y su empleo por monarcas cristianos; el asunto del 'mudéjar'; los conceptos de 'dibujo español', 'veta brava' o 'estilo trentino'; la españolización de artistas italianos o la acentuación de los rasgos hispánicos de artistas españoles que culminaron su formación y trabajaron en Italia; la identidad artística nacional a ojos de los extranjeros; el papel desempeñado por las mujeres artistas o la lectura de la tradición por parte de la Ilustración española, por no hablar de la problemática inclusión o exclusión de la producción artística española como parte fundamental del canon que ha ido configurando un nada inocente discurso historiográfico.
