Nicht nur die Schriften der alten Gelehrten, die lateinischen Bibeln, die überlieferten Zauber- und Segenssprüche, die höfischen Epen u.v.m., sondern auch die Dramen vergangener Zeiten zählen dazu. Die Fastnachtspiele gehören zu den wohl bedeutendsten Dramen der spätmitellalterlichen Zeit. Jedoch stellt sich einem die Frage, was an diesen Fastnachtspielen so besonders war. Hierfür soll zuerst die Frage geklärt werden, auf welche Traditionen sich die Fastnacht überhaupt begründet. Desweiteren soll die Frage geklärt werden, wer die Organisatoren dieser Spiele waren. In vielen Städten mit Fastnachttradition organisierten die Handwerker diese Spiele. 'Im Gegensatz [dazu] ist in Lübeck das [Fastnachtspiel] ein Privileg des städtischen Patriziats, nämlich der Zirkelbruderschaft.' Wer aber war die Zirkelbruderschaft Und welche Ziele verfolgten sie mit der Organisation dieser Spiele Gab es hierfür politische oder ökonomische Gründe Aber nicht nur die Gegebenheiten der damaligen Zeit sind interessant zu untersuchen, sondern auch die Fastnachtspiele an sich. 'Eine genaue Vorstellung über ihre Entstehung und ihre Gestalt läßt sich jedoch nicht gewinnen, da wir mit Ausnahme eines einzigen Textes nur die Titel von 73 Stücken, die zwischen 1430 und 1515 gespielt wurden, besitzen.' Durch die verlorengegangenen Fastnachtspiele steht die Wissenschaft vor vielen Rätseln. Dies ist für Historiker, Sprachwissenschaftler und Mediävisten eine große Herausforderung sowie ein großes Ärgernis, da sie sich nicht mit den Stücken direkt, sondern lediglich mit Vermutungen zu den einzelnen Titeln beschäftigen können. Das einzige überlieferte Fastnachtspiel aus Lübeck ist das 'Henselyns boek'. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll die aufgeworfenen Fragen beantworten und darüber hinaus auch noch einige weitere mittelniederdeutsche Fastnachtspiele, die aus der Frühen Neuzeit stammen und zum Teil überliefert wurden, erläutern.
