This copy does NOT have any library markings. First Edition. Columbia Biological Series number XVIII. COPY OF NOBEL LAUREATE SALVADOR LURIA, with his name and date (1959…) written on front flyleaf (see photo). There are ink markings by Luria in the text, either notes or lines, on pp. 20, 26, 30, 34, 35 (see photo), 39 (see photo), 41, 43, 45, 47 (see photo), 49, 50 (see photo), 51, 52, 53. Salvador Luria shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969 with Max Delbrück and Alfred Hershey "for their discoveries concerning the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses." "This book is based on the Jesup Lectures delivered in April, 1956, in the Department of Zoology of Columbia University in the City of New York. A portion of the text is unchanged and the colloquial style generally retained. . . . The scope of the lectures was a reappraisal, on the basis of present knowledge, of the theory of the gene" (p. 1). "The many visitors who came to work with Ponte in Glasgow carried away varied impressions, but one common theme has been expressed by K. M. Dronamraju (personal communication), who wrote that: 'Before my departure for Glasgow, I recall reading Haldane's copy of Ponte's book, 'Trends in Genetic Analysis', and was struck by its simplicity and clarity. Indeed, his writing style was much better than that of many who were born and brought up in England, and it reminded me of Dobzhansky, who was equally skilled in English although his mother tongue was Russian.' (Bernard L. Cohen, "Guido Pontecorvo ('Ponte'): A Centenary Memoir", Genetics, Vol. 177, no. 3, November 2007, pp. 1439-1444). "In his Jesup lectures entitled 'Trends in Genetic Analysis', Pontecorvo traces several of his insights into the nature of the genetic material to his teacher H.J. Muller. Indeed he has expressed the opinion on several occasions, including his Raman lectures on the Development of Genetic Ideas, that Muller's contributions to the evolution of the gene theory have not been adequately appreciated. Muller had an equal regard for his pupil. Prof. S. P. Ray Chowdhury, a contemporary of Pontecorvo at Edinburgh, once told me the following anecdote. Muller, it seems, had the habit of supervising his students rather closely, urging them to organise their work into well-spelt projects and encouraging them to mutually criticise each other's plans. Someone in the group once asked him why he did not do this to Pontecorvo. Muller replied 'Guido? He does not need this; he has his own ideas' " ("Biographical Sketch" by Obaid Siddiqi, in "Topics in Genetic Analysis Selected Papers of G. Pontecorvo Raman Professor, 1982-83", which was published in 1985). Signed by Author(s).

The one gene-one enzyme hypothesis is implicit in this paper and is the reason why this is a landmark publication in biochemical genetics (see photo of one paragraph on p. 505). But the exact wording "one gene-one-enzyme" is not in this paper, contrary to the impression some have. Quoting Norman Horowitz in his biographical memoir of George Beadle: "Beadle summarized the whole field of biochemical genetics in an historic article in Chemical Reviews (1945,4). He proposed that the biochemical actions of genes could be explained by assuming that genes are responsible for enzyme specificity, the relation being that 'a given enzyme will usually have its final specificity set by one and only one gene. The same is true of other unique proteins, for example, those functioning as antigens.' This statement became known as the 'one gene-one enzyme' hypothesis of gene action and is Beadle's major legacy to fundamental genetics. Controversial at first (the controversy itself is an interesting reflection on the state of genetics at the time), it was eventually proved to be correct." The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1958 was divided, one half jointly to George Wells Beadle and Edward Lawrie Tatum "for their discovery that genes act by regulating definite chemical events" and the other half to Joshua Lederberg "for his discoveries concerning genetic recombination and the organization of the genetic material of bacteria.".
