L'intérieur est en excellent état sans rien à signaler qui soit digne de mention sinon un léger jaunissement uniforme des pages, quelques cachets de bibliothèque en début de volume ainsi qu'à la page 100 et un soulignement en rouge des noms d'auteur et du titre sur la page de titre indiquant au relieur quoi inscrire sur le dos de la reliure.

Bound in contemporary calf, spine richly gilt, edges gilt; preserved in its original calf slip box; binding and box with a few isolated light traces of worming. Finely illustrated rococo missal in vernacular German presenting the Roman rite as an allegory of the Passion of Christ. The remarkably detailed illustrations by Jan Philips van der Schlichten (1681-1745), court painter of the Elector of Baden, show the different positions taken by the priest and altar boy at each stage of the of ritual and their appropriate ecclesiastical vestments ; each plate has an architectural background of varying richly decorated altar-pieces. Schlichten was a prolific Dutch artist who had moved to Heidelberg in 1720. The plates were engraved by Philipp Andreas Kilian (1714-89), court engraver to Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, excepting the last one, by the Mannheim artist Johann Georg Wis(s)ger (c1722-97). In the present copy plates 33 and 34 were printed out of sequence; this was corrected by the printer by pasting the appropriate version on top of the impression. The compiler was the Jesuit educational writer Vogel; the imperial privilege, dated Mannheim, 8th February 1752, is followed by a preface by Theodor Weber, Father Provincial for the Rhine region. Light traces of usage in a few right margins, otherwise well preserved for a manual of this kind; blank end papers with early 19th century owners notes in ink and pencil. A separate impression of the plates with a brief French text was issued from the same press in 1738 with the title Tableaux de la Sainte Messe (36f) - see Lipperheide Oc28, (illustration no 106, but dated 1764).
