Condition: New. 2003 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1934). SB. 360pp. 7 b/w photos and self portrait (drawing) frontispiecePublished Price £14.50 This outstanding memoir, introduced by Winston Churchill, who describes it as a vivid book, provides a very close view of the fighting on the Western Front as seen with French eyes from the English Staff. In the words of Sir William Robertson Maze became an âinstitutionâ, in fact he was unique and his story is a terrific one, undoubtedly one of the best of all personal accounts of the fighting. It begins with his watching the BEF disembarking at Havre in August 1914 and among the cavalry he noted a regiment with grey horses. He decided to join up with them as interpreter and get to the war with them. He was taken on with the Royal Scots Greys and was with them at Mons and through the retreat. At one point he got lost in 2nd Divisionâs area and was taken off to be shot as a spy. Fortunately an officer of the Greys saw and recognized him otherwise his war would have come to an abrupt end. From the Greys he was taken on by Gough, then commanding 2nd Cavalry Division, and he followed him to Corps and Army, and when Gough was relieved of command in 1918 he went to Rawlinson. He served them all as a combination of scout, liaison officer and interpreter. His courage and self-devotion were selfless. Year after year, in battle after battle he was always in the thick of it bringing back trustworthy, lucid and increasingly experienced information. He gained the complete confidence of the highest commanders and could walk straight in to the presence of the Army commander to make his report. He was wounded four times and awarded the DCM, MM and Bar. A truly remarkable man with a truly remarkable story.

Brown Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1934. First edition. [xiii], 353pp, a frontispiece, 7 other black and white illustrations, and 5 maps. Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979) was an Anglo-French painter. He is often known as "The last of the Post Impressionists" and was one of the great artists of his generation. During the First World War, Maze met Winston Churchill in the trenches and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship. At the outbreak of the WWI Maze attempted to join the French army but was deemed unfit. He then offered his services to the British and became an interpreter with the British cavalry regiment, the Royal Scots Greys. During the retreat from Mons, Maze became separated from the Royal Scots and narrowly avoided being captured by the Germans but was taken prisoner by a British unit. His position with the Royal Scots Greys was unofficial and his lack of documentation and his odd uniform led the British to think he was a spy, and was sentenced to death. On his way to face the firing squad, Maze was recognised by an officer from the Royal Scots Greys who happened to be passing and who quickly secured his release. He joined the staff of General Hubert Gough, where he undertook reconnaissance work to produce accurate drawings of enemy positions and other military objectives. In this book Maze writes of his experiences of the action that he saw on the Western Front. There is an introductions by Winston S. Churchill. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with blue titling and blue, white, and red stripes. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and a small white stain near the top corner of the rear board. The spine ends are bumped with a little bit of damage to the cloth and there is a split in the cloth of about 3/4" on the bottom and a split of about 1" on the top of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with the following inscription from the author on the half-title page: "To a brother "Grey", To a brother "brush", To a good friend - Paul Maze - 1947". The front free endpaper has been signed 'Haig'. From the library of Dawyck Haig RSA (the 2nd Earl Haig) Haig being the brother 'Grey', 'brush', friend referred to in the inscription. Inscribed and Signed by the au.
