Book. …

Add to basketEngraving (193 x 255 mm). Mounted in a folding white mat (328 x 511 mm). Drawn by lions, the goddess Cybele sits atop her chariot bringing plenty, with the harvest scenes behind her emphasising her attributes. An often feared but universally respected cult of Roman religion, the originally Anatolian "Great Mother" here clearly also represents Rome itself as ruler of the world: beneath her foot is a globe with animal designs representing creation, corresponding to the concluding lines of the poem below: "Gran segni ancor nel ventre tuo si vede / Che gia tenesti 'l mondo sotto 'l piede". - In the lower right corner, we find the signature of Antonio Lafreri (1512-77), one of the most illustrious engravers active in mid-sixteenth century Rome, particularly celebrated for his "Lafreri Atlases" which made the growing cartographical knowledge of the globe more widely available. Born in Burgundy, he was active in the Eternal City from the 1540s onwards, and often took Roman material as his subject matter. The present engraving follows a drawing by the painter Baldassarre Peruzzi (1481-1536). - Originally worshipped by the Phrygians of Asia Minor, a prophecy of the Sybilline Oracle led to the import of the cult of Cybele to Rome in 204 BCE during the Second Punic War. Called the "Magna Mater" ("Great Mother") by the Romans, her temple was built on the Palatine Hill and was served by eunuch priests known as Galli, whose frenzies at her rituals were depicted by Ovid in his Fasti and by Catullus in his longest poem (63), concerning the myth of the goddess' beloved, Attis. - An elegant piece of Roman engraving on a classical Roman theme from the height of the sixteenth century. - Minor soiling to margins and lower portion with inscription, small loss to two corners, overall good condition.…
