Se habló y escribió principalmente en la Galia, un área que incluía, en su momento de mayor expansión, la moderna Francia, Bélgica, Luxemburgo, la mayor parte de Suiza, el norte de Italia, y parte de Holanda y Alemania. En este nuevo título de la colección AELAW se estudia el galo desde tres puntos de vista: la lengua, la escritura y las inscripciones. En el apartado correspondiente a la lengua se analizan los glotónimos, los rasgos fundamentales de la fonología, la morfología y la sintaxis gala. A continuación se presentan las tres modalidades de escritura empleada por los galos: galo-griega, galo-etrusca y galolatina, y se presta atención a la onomástica. La epigrafía se examina geográficamente y considerando los tipos de soportes. El censo de inscripciones que se ofrece enumera las publicadas por los Services régionaux de lArchéologie y por Études celtiques. Dos inscripciones galas (el Ara de Glanum, Bouches-du-Rhône, y la tablilla de plomo de Chamalières, Puy-de-Dôme) se estudian de forma detallada.
