Elio Modigliani, figura autentica di esploratore-naturalista a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento, parte nel 1886 per una serie di viaggi coraggiosi tra le popolazioni dell'arcipelago malese (a Nias, tra i Batak di Sumatra e a Men…tawei) in compagnia di un assistente persiano, esperto imbalsamatore di animali, e con un seguito di cacciatori malesi cui affida le sue preziose collezioni zoologiche e botaniche. Nel 1891 si imbarca a Sumatra per Engano, "l'isola della gente nuda", "l'isola delle donne" raccontata dai navigatori portoghesi, olandesi e inglesi, perlopiù scampati, su quelle coste, a un naufragio. Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1894, questo piacevole racconto del suo incontro con gli eredi, decimati dalle malattie, di quegli Enganesi che utilizzavano le proprie donne come esche per gli agguati, spogliando sistematicamente le navi straniere alla fonda, non è solo il resoconto delle escursioni compiute attraverso e intorno all'isola per fotografare e raccogliere materiale etnografico, animali, piante, ma soprattutto il ritratto di una civiltà còlta, con l'attenta curiosità dello studioso positivista, nei suoi costumi, nelle abitudini quotidiane e nelle sue leggende.
