In the book there are more than 600 pictures in this volume have been reproduced from the original cuts made by Frank Leslie's war artists, and their accuracy and authentically are guaranteed. They are are supplemented by maps and a succinct history of war, which begins with the Dred Scott case, the rapid at Harper's Ferry and the other incidents leading up to the conflagration and covers the ensuing period up to the cessation of hostilities and the assassination of President Lincoln. The scope of the pictorial record is immense: battle scenes and major naval engagements, forts and encampments and civilization evacuations, portraits of the principal participants in the struggle, from generals to presidents . There are homely scenes such as "Fresh Bread" coming out of an impromptu Ovens invented by the 19th Regiment of New York Volunteers, and Humorous on such a "A Street in Harper's Ferry which is described as "illustrating the grotesque in war. a role licking gayety in proportion to the excitement. scenes which almost approached those of carnival" - A striking contrast to the depictions of the very man, General Sherman, who concluded that "War is Hell". All in all, Frank Leslie's illustrated History of the Cival war is an invaluable graphic document which brings the past back to vivid life and, by showing the heroism as well as the sacrifices made by both sides in our nation's dark days, help bind those wounds which have not yet healed and strengthen the bonds between North and South which time and a Southern Presidents have begun to forge.
