Hardcover. Condition: Used - Like New. New Mexico is widely considered a center for the visual arts, but one of the lesser-known features of its art world is the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program (RAIR) in southeastern New Mexico. Begun in 1967 by patron Donald Anderson, this program has been known by artists as the 'Gift of Time.' Artists whose forms include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and other media work without distraction for six months to one year. RAIR provides studio and living space, along with a monthly living stipend, and artists with families are encouraged to apply and attend. In celebration of RAIR's fortieth anniversary, Ann McGarrell, whose husband was one of the artists-in-residence, has written an anecdotal history of the Roswell program. In a town known for its UFO landings, Roswell's Artist-in-Residence program provides a contemporary counterpoint to the Southwest's traditional art forms. Additionally, RAIR has provided inspiration to many of New Mexico's most prominent artists, including former attendees Luis Jimenez and Robert Parke Harrison.

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Jack Beal (illustrator). First Edition. The 114th handmade book from the press, a sequence of poems "Being a Recollection of four Friends' Excursion from Umbria through various French and Italian Places with digressive Reflections upon Matters of Gourmandaise, Botany, beloved Works of Art & Amourous Play" with botanical line drawings by frequent Hamady collaborator Jack Beal printed in several colors on several more colors & kinds of paper. #45 of 125 copies SIGNED by McGarrell & Beal; bound by Kent Kasuboske with assistance from Marta Gomez in flexible thin plywood boards on a vellum spine with exposed stitching - Kasuboske & Gomez were graduate students who studied with Hamady in the late 1980s; Kasuboske became Hamady's 'aide-de-camp' and made some of the paper used in the book; Gomez went on to produce her own fine books. Laid in are the original typed receipt to a standing-order customer, Laurence T. Giles - a few of whose poems were published by Hamady in 1978 - on one of the more interesting Perishable Press letterheads, with an unexplained additional discount, creased; the original scrap paper book number slip with the buyer's address in Hamady's hand, minor crease & bit of tape; and a folded flyer containing two Rimbaud poems, 'Seapiece' and 'Motion' in English & French, "Produced for Hermann Zapf in the Autumn of 1989" [as part of Zapf's 1993 publication 'Poetry Through Typography'] - a single sheet of (probably) Hamady's Shadwell paper about 22" by 8¼", folded thrice accordion-style, minor creasing. Zapf was an important type designer and friend of Hamady's, who used Zapf's Palatino face in many of his early books. All in a drop-spine box with embossed decoration after one of Beal's drawings. Contents near fine except as noted; the box does show some smudging, minor scuffs, slight discoloration. A surcharge for expedited or international shipping of this oversize book may be required; please inquire for an accurate quote. Size: 13¼" by 10½".
