Paperback. Condition: New. This book discusses educational research as a social discourse, as a discursive practice, in relation to epistemological issues, and in the light of questions of ethics. A number of historians and sociologists of educational sciences have demonstrated that the preference in the social and behavioral sc…iences for what was seen as a superior quantitative approach rested not just on developments within these disciplines but also and equally on external changes associated with the social context in general and with the dominance, in particular, of meritocratic values with the rise of the neo-liberal society. At the same time some of the work of certain philosophers of education over the last two decades has exposed the naivety of thinking dominated by the naive means-end schema. To a greater and greater extent, the idea of an applied science in which educational intervention is a simple consequence of understanding is being abandoned in favor of a theory of development that is realized in the intervention itself. In line with this, one sees an evolution in which the innovative role of pedagogical research can be emphasized again. Thus, "utopian" perspectives acquire a new legitimacy: the integration of empirical and philosophical research, of quantitative and quantitative methods forces itself anew upon us.

Paperback. Condition: New. Advanced reader on the history of educationDevelopments in educational systems worldwide have largely contributed to the modernization and globalization of present-day society. However, in order to fully understand their impact, educational systems must be interpreted against a background of particular… situations and contexts. This textbook brings together more than twenty (collaborative) contributions focusing on the two key themes in the work of Marc Depaepe: educationalization and appropriation. Compiled for his international master classes, these selected writings provide not only a thorough introduction to the history of modern educational systems, but also a twenty-five year overview of the work of a well-known pioneer in the field of history of education. Covering the modernization of schooling in Western history, the characteristics and origins of educationalization, the colonial experience in education and the process of appropriation, Between Educationalization and Appropriation will be of great interest to a larger audience of scholars in the social sciences.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, vi + 247 pages, NOT ex-library. Printed in the UK (not an economy / Indian edition). Clean and bright pages with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Minor traces of a removed sticker on rear board. Published without a dust jacket. -- Pushing 'social' responsib…ilities on schools is a process that has been underway for a long time. This phenomenon has been studied more in Europe than in North America and the U.K. and has been labelled Pädagogisierung. The editors have chosen to use 'Educationalization' to identify the overall orientation or trend toward thinking about education as the focal point for addressing or solving larger human problems. The term describes these phenomena as a sub-process of the 'modernization' of society, but it also has negative connotations, such as increased dependence, patronization, and pampering. In this book distinguished philosophers and historians of education focus on 'educationalization' to expand its meaning through an engagement with educational theory. Topics discussed are the family and the child, the 'learning society', citizenship education, widening participation in higher education, progressive education, and schooling movements such as No Child Left Behind. -- Contents: 1. Introduction: Pushing Social Responsibilities: The Educationalization of Social Problems / Paul Smeyers & Marc Depaepe; 2. About Pedagogization: From the Perspective of the History of Education / Marc Depaepe; 3. Condition: Nuevo.
