L'ouvrage donne la description de plusieurs centaines de végétaux, avec leurs usages et propriétés médicinales. Tome 1: Introduction à la botanique, contenant un abrégé des principes et de l'histoire de cette science. Suivie d'une instruction sur la formation d'un herbier, la dessication, la macération, l'infusion des plantes etc. Tome 2: Contenant la description des plantes usuelles, rangées suivant la méthode de Tournefort. Claret de la Tourette (1729-1793) fut Conseiller à la cour des Monnaies mais, après vingt années d'exercice, il renonce à ses fonctions pour se consacrer entièrement à ses études sur l'histoire naturelle et plus particulièrement la botanique, en faisant une place à l'archéologie et à l'histoire. Entré à l'Académie à 25 ans, section des sciences, il est à 38 ans secrétaire et le restera jusqu'à sa mort. Il ne fut pas seulement un amateur érudit mais réellement un savant. En botanique il innova en étudiant, avant les autres, les lichens y compris les espèces habituées à d'autres climats. Il rassembla aussi une collection d'insectes et une collection de minéraux. Dès 1763, il entreprend d'installer le jardin botanique de l'école vétérinaire de Lyon, prévu sur les pentes de la Croix Rousse, et cela avec l'aide de l'abbé Rozier. Puis il installe pour lui, un jardin d'acclimatation important sur les pentes de Fourvière. En 1766, c'est dans le parc de la Tourette qu'il organise un parc botanique où l'on comptera bientôt plus de 3000 espèces, arbres, plantes et arbres étrangers. Il rencontra ou fut en correspondance avec les botanistes de son époque : Linné, Bruyset, Haller, Gilibert, Bernard de Jussieu et Jean-Jacques Rousseau son ami sans compter l'abbé Rozier. Le plus important travail laissé par lui est « Démonstrations Elémentaires de Botanique » Lyon 1766, 2 vol. in-8, parfois attribué exclusivement à tort à l'abbé Rozier. Le succès fut certain malgré l'époque défavorable : 4 éditions en 18 ans. L'abbé François Rozier prêta son concours pour la première édition et la quatrième fut augmentée par Jean Emmanuel Gilibert, autre botaniste qui fut médecin et Maire de Lyon. Cet ouvrage était destiné à l'instruction des élèves de l'École Vétérinaire récemment fondée par Bourgelat .

Prima ed unica edizione di questa rara plaquette in cui l' A. d…escrive questo strano caso teratologico affrontato però con l' approccio di un' epoca in cui la teratologia non aveva preso ancora quella veste scientifica più definita a cui giungerà solo nel XIX secolo. Infatti la descrizione inizia: "Gli scherzi della Natura hanno invitato a se in ogni tempo gli sguardi incuriositi de' Fisiciquasi che l' umana debolezza pruovi una specie di compiacenza nel cogliere la Natura stessa in errore.". "Un Bambino mostruoso nato in questa città di Lionel' illustre chirurgo di questa nostra città M. Flurant fu chiamato nel Giugno 1774 ad assistere al parto di una Dama gravida solo di sette mesi. Il Bambino che elle diede alla luce parve addolorato e di costituzione assai debole anche per un feto di sette mesilo stato del bambino annunziava una morte vicina. Morto il bambino egli ottenne di poter farne l' esame, e la notomia. Ebbe la gentilezza di avvisarmene". "Alla prima ispezione il Bambino creduto sarebbesi ermafrodito,se l' ermafroditismonon fosse che un chimera. Egli avea infatti l' apparenza di ambi i sessi; ma era nato per offrire una stranezza ancora più singolare.". "La parte maschile parea dominareun' appendice carnosa rappresentava la verga e pel luogo che occupavama tutta la conformazione anteriore invitava a sospettarerealmente il Bambino non era fornito di niuna delle parti essenzialinè dell' unoi né dell' altro sesso.". "Dissesto simile negli organi della generazione di cui non si trovò nessun indizioal di sotto di un picciol corto poco evidente, ch' ei sospettò una verga, o una clitoride mal formataio non ho una supposizione sul fatto che simili mostri possano vivere". Il testo prosegue poi con la descrizione di due altri casi osservati a Lione e nelle vicinanze, facendo si che l' Autore infine si porga un perché "la Natura ha voluto tali bizzarre mostruosità a Lione tutte nel breve tempo di questi pochi anni.".
