PISA, das ,Programme for International Student Assessment", untersucht alle drei Jahre, wie gut funfzehnjahrige Schulerinnen und Schuler auf die Anforderungen der Wissensgesellschaft vorbereitet sind. Der internationale Vergleich in den Schlusselbereichen Lesen, Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften beschreibt Starken und Schwachen in den Kompetenzen der Jugendlichen. Die Berichte haben in Deutschland grosse Aufmerksamkeit gefunden, aber auch Fragen nach den Grunden fur die Ergebnisse aufgeworfen. Da das Design der internationalen Studie keine gesicherten Antworten auf diese Fragen zulasst, wurde die Untersuchung in Deutschland erweitert: Schulerinnen und Schuler der internationalen Stichprobe wurden in einer Langsschnittstudie sowohl in der neunten als auch in der zehnten Klassenstufe getestet. Diese Konzeption erfasst die Veranderung der mathematischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Kompetenz im Verlauf eines Schuljahres und ermoglicht aussagekraftige Bedingungsanalysen.
