Paperback. Condition: New. A new examination of the history of ceramic art, spanning ancient to modern times, emphasizing its traditions, materials, and methods of makingConcise but comprehensive, Ceramic Art brings together the voices of art historians, conservators, and artists to tell the history of making art from fired clay…. The story spans history and continents, examining the global traditions of ceramists that range from pre-Columbian Peruvian artisans to contemporary African studio potters. The volume shows how human need gave rise to multiple traditions in earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, glaze, and surface decoration from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Essays describe the core materials and practice of ceramics, followed by consideration of its production, consumption, and use. Throughout, the focus is on the power of materials and the role conservation plays in the afterlife of a ceramic object. An accessible introduction to an ancient practice, Ceramic Art offers new ways of thinking about the broader forces that have shaped the traditions of the medium.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: New. Exhibition catalogue for Body Vessel Clay at Two Temple Place in 2022. With foreword by Dame Magdalene Odundo and texts by Dr Jareh Das, Professor Ozioma Onuzulike and Moira Vincentelli. This exhibition showcased the ceramic medium through artworks by three generations of Black women artists working i…n clay. Body Vessel Clay spanned 70 years of ceramics, celebrating the medium in new and surprising ways. Beginning with the seminal Nigerian potter, Ladi Kwali, and examining her interaction with 1950s British Studio Pottery, this important exhibition brought together a rich history with experimental new works by Black women working with clay today. Through Kwali and her female contemporaries, this new perspective on one of the world's oldest artforms reinterpreted the line of Kwali's influence and its resonance on a younger generation of international contemporary women artists working with clay in radical new ways. Artists celebrated in the exhibition included Magdalene Odundo DBE, who worked with Kwali, through Bisila Noha, looking both backwards and forwards, and into a striking contemporary display from Phoebe Collings-James, Shawanda Corbett, Chinasa Vivian Ezhuga, Jade Montserrat and Julia Phillips. The exhibition was curated by independent curator, researcher and writer Dr Jareh Das.
