This book describes the experiences of an English-born Colonial who, in the 1880s, left his position as a stationmaster in Cape Colony to become the first Gold Commissioner of the new De Kaap Gold Fields in the Transvaal. The author provides an excellent account of the social and political conditions in the newly formed republic, which at the time was bankrupt and yet possessed vast, untapped mineral wealth that the European powers were eager to exploit. As the book progresses, the author uses his personal experiences to critique the Transvaal government, which he found to be corrupt, inefficient, and autocratic, with the cynical President Paul Kruger at its heart. The author concludes that for all its faults, the Transvaal had the potential to be a great nation, and he laments the fact that the Boer leaders squandered this potential and ultimately brought about the country's downfall. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
