Hardback. Condition: New. Tuwim's rhythmic poem Locomotive invites us aboard an old steam train as it chuffs and puffs out of the station. As it races along, rattling and clattering past bridges and valleys, we look inside some of the train's many carriages. There's a wagon of bananas, one full of pianos, another is carrying ani…mals off to the zoo, there are giraffes and elephants and bicycles and umbrellas, and a trio of men, all eating sausages. Le Witt and Him's illustrations capture inventively the smoke and the speed and the humorous cargo. Replicating the original edition, this book includes two more short stories - the well-loved folk tale about a turnip so enormous that the farmer can't pull it up and the hilarious story of chatterbox birds who can't agree on anything. Harking back to precedents in Russian children's book-making and looking forward to the Picture Puffins and other hugely successful models in Britain and North America, Locomotive stands out as a beacon of quality and imagination that works its charm on children and parents in the twenty-first century just as much as it did on its first publication eighty years ago. Lewitt And Him (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. LEWITT-HIM (Jan Le Witt and George Him). The Football's Revolt. London: Country Life Ltd., 1939. First edition. 4to (285 × 220 mm). 28 pp. Colour-illustrated throughout, with text and images by the design partnership Lewitt-Him. Original pictorial boards, yellow cloth spine. Light so…iling and mottling to cloth and boards, corners lightly rubbed, contents clean and fresh, colours bright. A small pencil price of 2/6 to the front cover and early ownership inscription to front free endpaper (dated 1941). The Polish émigré artists Jan Le Witt (1907-1991) and George Him (1900-1982), who settled in Britain in 1937, quickly established themselves as leading figures in modernist graphic design. The Football's Revolt is one of their first books produced in London, combining humorous text with vividly stylised illustrations. Its narrative — in which a football match descends into absurdist chaos as objects and crowds take on lives of their own and a football gets stuck in the air, provided an ideal showcase for them. The book was popular enough to be reissued by Country Life in the 1940s, during the Second World War, though this original 1939 printing is the true first edition.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. First Edition. about 30 pgs. During the wartime and years to follow they became one of the most influential partnerships in Britain and their illustration style influenced a generation of younger illustrators such as Jack Townend, Hilary Stebbing and many others. Working under the name Lewitt-Him, George Him and Jan L…e Witt, who began working together in Warsaw in 1933, arrived in London in 1937. They had already produced some ground-breaking children's books such as Locomotive (1938, first published in Poland) based on the text by the distinguished Polish poet Julian Tuwin. Once in England, the pair created several high-quality children's books, being among the first illustrators working in the UK to introduce modernist elements for this age-group: their style leaned towards abstraction and borrowed elements from Surrealism and Cubism. A typical example is Blue Peter (1943), with text by Jan Le Witt's wife, Alina. This story about a blue dog born to a white mother who is persecuted but eventually finds a home on Blue Dog Island is a parable that no doubt appealed to George Him, a Jew who witnessed the Russian Revolution, and was living through the persecutions and atrocities of the Holocaust at the time of publication. Very good- hardcover copy; no dust jacket. Previous owner's name ("Natalie") written on front endpaper. (684). Lewitt-Him (illustrator).
