Several additional recipes fixed to supplied blank pages. 172 pages. Rare. No copies located in WorldCat institutions. One of the earliest cookbooks published in Pendleton, Oregon. Issued in December 1927, it precedes the American Legion Auxiliary 1936 cookbook by nearly a decade. Originally owned by Edith Janet (Laing) Hudson, who was born in Pendleton in 1901 (seven entries in the cookbook are credited to her aunt, Fannie Laing, aka Mrs. James T. Laing). Both of Edith's Canadian grandfathers, Robert Laing and John Dand, were Umatilla County pioneers, having settled there in the early to mid-1880s, both farming in the Cold Springs area just north of Pendleton. She married Elmer Hudson in 1924. They moved to Bend in 1931, and together owned and operated the Maytag Appliance Store from about 1941, until their retirement in 1967 (a little vintage Maytag Blue Cheese Cookbook is tucked in). Johnson.After Samuel Halkett's death in 1871, the materials he collected for a dictionary of anonymous literature were given to John Laing. Laing enlarged the collection but passed away before the work was published. The work was then edited and published by Laing's daughter.This set comprises volumes I to VI (published 1926 to 1932) of the main volumes, which contain the alphabetically arranged dictionary, with a supplement to the rear of volume VI. In addition, this set includes volume VII (published 1934), which contains the index (by authors, initials and pseudonyms) and the second supplement. Two extra volumes, not included in this set, were later added in 1956 and 1962. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart, with very light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are untrimmed but very bright and clean. Dust wrappers are generally smart, with light chipping to the wraps, more so to the head and tail of the spine, and closed tears to the flyleaves. Light marks to the wraps and sunning to the spines of the wraps. Scattering of spots to the spines of the wraps to volumes II-VI. Two tape repairs to the rear of the wrap, and a loss to the tail of the spine of the wraps, to volume IV. Ink mark to the front of the wrap to volume V. Fine. book.
