Walther Manshard liefert mit seiner Untersuchung Ghanas einen wertvollen Beitrag für diese Bestrebungen. Ohne sich auf brauchbare wissenschaftliche Vorarbeiten sowie Archiv- oder Kartenmaterial stützen zu können, hat er in langwieriger Feldarbeit 1952 1960 in Ghana zum größten Teil selbst erst die geographischen Forschungsgrundlagen geschaffen. Seine Untersuchung der agrarischen Verhältnisse Ghanas hatte zu berücksichtigen, daß sich in wenigen Generationen die Situation besonders auf dem Gebiet der Eingeborenenwirtschaft grundlegend gewandelt hat und daß eines der wesentlichen Probleme darin besteht, neue geeignete Methoden und eine Wirtschaftsform höherer Stufe zu finden, die den Wünschen und Fähigkeiten der politisch selbständigen Afrikaner der Gegenwart entspricht. Klar geht aus dem Buche hervor, daß ohne die Weiterentwicklung der Landwirtschaft die geplante Industrialisierung Utopie bleiben muß. Unter Berücksichtigung der wichtigsten Landschaftsformen Ghanas werden sämtliche Zweige der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion des Landes nach ökologischen, historischen und wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten eingehend untersucht.
