Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Tom of Finland undoubtedly counts among the great and truly influential artists of the latter 20th century. Through his iconic images, he almost single-handedly changed the way gay men were perceived by society, and - maybe even more important - how gay men perceived themselves. The massive oeuvre that he produced over the course of a career spanning nearly six decades is devoted almost entirely to this one topic: men, their bodies, and their spirits. This extraordinary consistency in subject-matter was matched by a life-long passion for the supreme discipline of freehand drawing. All he needed to create a universe of dazzlingly gorgeous hunks was a pencil and a sheet of paper. And he most likely drew every day of his life.Drawing, it seems, was an exercise for his restless imagination and desire. Tom's world was populated by cowboys, mechanics, cops, punks and thugs - all indulging their desires with great camaraderie and without guilt or prejudice. This book assembles a cross-section of these characters as dreamt up by the artist in rough sketches or more carefully executed studies. Mostly they served as preliminary drawings for the highly finished works, many of which were intended for publication. The playful format of an imaginary sketch book lets the viewer take an intimate glance over the artist's shoulder and share in his exuberant joie de vivre. 4to. 195 pp. Illustrated throughout in b/w and color. A new perspective on Tom of Finland, documenting his formative years in 1970s Hamburg. Although Tom of Finland's iconic portrayals of sensual and powerful cowboys, farm hands, soldiers and leathermen are closely associated with American culture, it was in early 1970s Hamburg that the artist first found fame. There he formed important friendships with various protagonists of the city's gay culture; his first ever exhibition was in Hamburg; and he even created a grand mural for the legendary Tom's Bar, which remains the only bar legitimately named after the artist. Regular commissions to design posters and ads for gay events in Hamburg allowed him to quit his day job as advertising executive and launch his artistic career, which led to the creation of the most extensive private collection of his drawings to date. This comprehensive publication delves into these seminal but under-researched years, documenting Tom of Finland's art and friendships from this time. Alongside around 150 illustrations and well researched texts, the book includes a facsimile of the artist's 1955 travel diary in Germany. Please note: Oversized volume: this book will require additional shipping for destinations outside the US; we will ship at cost. Illustrated boards. Light shelfwear. Very Good. …

The son of a French father and a German mother, he grew up in France, studied in Paris at the École Nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, and has lived in Berlin since 2010. In his works he not only unites different styles, but also allows the everyday to meet the mythical, guiding archaic figures through modern surroundings, and combining actual experiences with imaginary memories. Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Adam Lupton's palette is deliberately restricted to two spectral hues and their tonal variations. Working exclusively with red and blue-colors that evoke emotional extremes-Lupton creates scenes of contemporary urban life that at first appear serene and idyllic. His paintings possess a distinctly cinematic quality, yet behind the composed interiors, striking portraits, and urban vistas, subtle fissures open to reveal existential depths. Published to coincide with the artist's first exhibition at Galerie Judin, this monograph brings together paintings from the past three years and features an introductory essay by art critic and journalist Laura Helena Wurth. Text: : Laura Helena Wurth 106 pp. Englisch.…

Rilegato. Condition: new. Libro.…
