Paperback. Condition: New. How can we keep up with the deluge of information about COVID-19 and tell which parts are most important and trustworthy? We read: 'Scientists recommend', 'Experts warn', 'A new model predicts'. How do scientific experts come up with their recommendations? What do their predictions really mean for us, f…or our friends, and our families? How can we make rational decisions? And how can we have sensible conversations about the pandemic when we disagree? These are the questions that this book is trying to address. It is written in the form of dialogues. Alice, a student of epidemiology, explains the science to three of her fellow students who have a lot of questions for her. The students have the same concerns that we all share to varying degrees: What the pandemic is doing to our health, our economy, and our cherished freedoms. In their conversations, they discover how the science relates to these questions. The book focuses on epidemiology, the science of how infections spread and how the spread can be mitigated. The science of how many infections can be prevented by certain kinds of actions. This is what we need to understand if we want to act wisely, as individuals and as a society. The author's goal is to help the reader think about the COVID-19 pandemic like an epidemiologist. About the various preventive measures, what they are trying to accomplish, what the obstacles are. About what is likely to be most effective in the long run at moderate economic and personal cost. About the likely consequences of personal decisions. About how to best protect oneself and others while allowing all of us to lead lives that are as close as possible to normal. While some chapters present slightly more advanced material than others, no scientific background is needed to follow the conversations. The technical concepts are explained in small steps and the occasional calculations in the book require only high-school mathematics.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The proposed book will give a nontechnical account of scientific research that informs the predictions of scientists regarding the current Covid-19 epidemic and recommendations for an effective strategy for controlling the outbreak. While there are plenty of snippets of such information in t…he news, they are often presented in a disjointed manner and laden with scientific jargon. This, together with the unfortunate politicization of the public discourse about our response to the outbreak is making the deluge of data and information about the pandemic that we daily see and hear in the media confusing rather than illuminating for many concerned citizens with a limited scientific background. This volume aims at empowering the readers to understand how science operates, what its role is in the decision-making process, and how scientists conceptualize the process of disease transmission. It will show the rationale behind the overall strategy proposed by the CDC and behind individual recommended control measures, such as social distancing and wearing masks. The focus will be on the construction of epidemiological models in Part II and on interpreting actual data in Part III. For completeness, some biological background information and issues such as vaccine development will be discussed in Part I. The treatment of the science is kept at a level that is as elementary and free of excessive jargon as is possible without sacrificing scientific integrity. While Parts II and III are quantitative in nature, the mathematical tools are entirely restricted to the pre-calculus level. The material will be presented in the form of conversations between four fictitious students who bring different attitudes, perspectives, and levels of scientific preparation to the table. Under the guidance of Alice, who is assumed to be a student of epidemiology, they together work out the basic scientific issues surrounding the pandemic and our response to it. While putting some of the current controversies on the stage, their dialogues remain constructive and respectful throughout. While their attitudes and primary concerns differ, the dialogues focus entirely on understanding the science and its role in the decision-making process. There are dependencies between some of these conversations that naturally form a sequence, especially in Part II. However, most of them are independent of each other and can be read in any order that best fits the reader's interests. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. From the reviews: Serious graduate students . would profit from reading the book for the mathematical maturity they would gain in the process. The conversational, almost Socratic, style of exposition is well suited to giving students some insight into the process of doing mathematics as well as to the…importance of asking the right questions . Just and Weese's text would be ideally suited for.students who are serious about studying set theory. -Journal of Symbolic Logic The careful exposition, written in a lively and very readable style which addresses the reader rather directly, provides (by explanations, comments, and remarks) much information and motivation. Recommended. -Monatshefte fur Mathematik This book is an introduction to set theory for beginning graduate students who want to get a sound grounding in those aspects of set theory used extensively throughout other areas of mathematics. Topics covered include formal languages and models, the power and limitation of the Axiomatic Method, the Axiom of Choice, including the fascinating Banach-Tarski Paradox, applications of Zorn's Lemma, ordinal arithmetic, including transfinite induction, and cardinal arithmetic. The style of writing, more a dialogue with the reader than that of the Master indoctrinating the pupil, makes this also very suitable for self-study.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, ix + 416 pages. Ex-foreign university library, officially withdrawn; with internal ownership and inventory markings, some cancelled. Likely uncirculated, clean and bright throughout, untanned, with unmarked text, firmly bound. A short corner fold on a portion of leaves. Issued…without a dust jacket. -- The volume is designed to reflect the state of the art in set-theoretic research, focusing specifically on the continuum - the set of all real numbers - and the various set-theoretical aspects surrounding it. It is divided into two primary sections: - Talks [survey papers that provide a broad overview of various topics within set-theoretic research]; - Research Papers [technical papers covering specific aspects of set theory and its interactions with algebra and topology]. The text covers a wide range of advanced mathematical logic and set theory topics, including: - Descriptive Set Theory [exploring phenomena in analysis and topology]; - Measure and Category [analyzing the set theory of reals]; - Forcing and Axioms [includes discussions on Amoeba forcing, the Open Coloring Axiom, and elementary embeddings]. Notable Contributors: the volume features work from leading mathematicians such as Saharon Shelah, Alexander Kechris, Matthew Foreman, and Patrick Dehornoy.
